The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

98 machine can't connect to to Router/cable internet - - Winsock Error?

Asked by snowdude14 in Windows 98 Operating System

Tags: router, connect

We recently got cable and bought a router to build a network around the cable for all of our computers.  One computer is working fine (win xp) but the only other one we can hook up now will not connect to the router, or to cable internet.  We even tried making a network setup disk from xp and running it on the 98 machine, but that didn't do anything.

The router's ip is 192.168.1.1.  Pinging this ip from the 98 machine gets very quick responses, but pinging anything else on the network or internet gets an unknown host or timed out error (i.e. the XP computer was assigned 192.168.1.100, and a ping sent to this computer times out).

Lastnight the first step was to activate cable and to create an account.  We couldn't do it from the 98 machine (connected directly to the cable modem via ethernet), because at first the ip settings were messed up, and then the tech. told us that we had a winsock error, and that we'd have to contact M$ about the issue (yeah right!) and until then we wouldn't be able to activate or use cable.  We solved this by bringing the XP machine down to the modem and activating it on that computer.  But now the 98 machine just won't connect.  I tried releasing ip addresses, etc... and it is being recognized by the router because it was assigned 192.168.1.101, and is listed in the DHCP list of clients on the routers setup page.

Does anyone have any ideas?  How do I fix this?

Thanks in advance!
