Now I am still having the same problems.
I have changed the boot order to floppy, hard disk, cd-rom.
I went into IDE HDD AUTO DETECTION in the BIOS and:
primaster: CDROM
prislave: NOT INSTALLED
sec master: NOT INSTALLED
sec slave: NOT INSTALLED
When starting
Checking NVRAM...ok
primaster...ATAPI cdrom
Goes through first screen where says about memory, ethernet controller, floppy drivee, etc and boots from floppy and I chose without CDROm support.
Preparing to start your computer
This may take a few minutes. Please wait...
Then I get the message
Windows 98 has detected that drive c does not contain a valid FAT or FAT32 partition. There are several causes:
1. The drive may need to be partitioned. Toi create a partition on the drive run fdisk from the ms-dos command prompt.
2. You may be using third party disk partitioning software (which I'm not). If you are using this type of software, remove the Emergency Boot Disk from your computer and restart your computer. Then, follow the on-screen instructions to start your computer from a floppy disk.
3. Some viruses also cause your drive C not to register. You can use a virus scanning program to check your computer for viruses.
The dignostic tools were loaded to drive C:
To get HELP type HELP and press ENTER.
A:\>
I done a chkdsk and scandisk and says there are no problems.
Also tried fdisk/mbr but says there are NO FIXED DISKS PRESENT
In the bios I then changed primaster to auto and prislave to CDROM but this changes back when restart.
Goes through the same process before - checking NVRAM, autodetecting primaster - ATAPI cdrom
then
prislave - ATAPI incompatible
Press F1 to reume (which I do)
Get initial screen where says about memory, ethernet controller, floppy drivee, etc and boots from floppy and I chose with CDROM support this time.
Then get the message

again.
To me it looks like the C drive isn't registering. COuld this be a boot sector virus and how would I fix this? The computer used to work fine and there were no hardware or software changes made so cant understand how this would have happened. Not sure of the anti-virus software that was on it, if there was any, so have any of you any ideas?? please post soon, thanks,
Maximusimo
I also dont know the type of hard drive so can't download diagnostics from the manufacturers web site
