Question

Setting up Windows 98 's network settings for a LAN

Asked by: Jodacoda

Hello all,

I am trying to configure Windows 98 to work on a LAN, just for internet connection. I can see the IP assigned to the comp using "ipconfig." I have manually entered that ip, the subnet mask, the gateway, and couple of WINS servers. For the components, I am using adapters "Client for Microsoft Networks" and the ethernet card adapter, which is bound to a TCP protocol. Do I need anyother components? (i.e. MS VPN) Am I missing something?

Thanks a bunch!

that's about the right way of setting up Win98 for LAN connection. now can you connect to the Internet and surf properly? if so, then your set up is fine.

MS VPN is needed only if you need secure remote access over the Internet or with other people on the same LAN. for home use it is unnecessary.

regards.

Find out if the LAN actually uses DHCP, in which case you should not set IP manually (unless called for by
specific needs). What *is* the IP you get assigned? Is it a valid address on the LAN? Your network admin
should be able to tell you all about this and I suppose she/he wants to be told about you hooking up your
machine to the network...

Where can you find the Windows NT domain ?

by: signlessPosted on 2003-08-24 at 22:36:21ID: 9214237

I don't have 98 handy, so this is off the cuff.... I'm pretty sure it's in the properties of the Client for Microsoft Networks. (Looking up, it's mentioned in mimicsu's post). Be sure the name is copied exactly.

Another note, be sure you are logging on when you start the computer. If you don't get a login box, we can troubleshoot that. If you are not logged in, you will never be able to get any file sharing services.

From your post, I assume you are connecting to an NT domain?

Is this for work or home?  If home, are you using a HUB & ICS or a cable/dsl router?

"I have manually entered that ip, the subnet mask, the gateway, and couple of WINS servers. "

Since you manually entered in that data I assumed you were on a NT server LAN.  If not & you're on a home LAN then that setting is not needed.
-----
netwk neigh - tcp prop's - config tab (choose 1 or 2 below)

1) default netwk settings
ip addr tab - obtain ip auto
wins tab - use dhcp for wins
gatw tab - blank
dns tab - disabled

2) manual static netwk settings (on Host - Start, Run, winipcfg, OK. Click ICShare Adapter, More Info, note the DNS server address, and then click OK.)

ip addr tab - specify ip & subnet (192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0)
wins tab - disabled
gatw tab - input ip of gatw srvr (192.168.0.1 - ICS host pc)
dns tab - enable, type the host computer name in the Host box.
        - NOTE: The Domain box can be left blank, and note that the computer name is case-sensitive.
        - DNS Server Search Order box, input ip of DNS srvr (192.168.0.1 - ICS host pc)
        - NOTE: If the HOST IP address does not work properly, try using your ISP's DNS server IP address.

i have a wizard which when run you can network two pc's easily by using options on the wizards step (windows 98), if you want i can e-mail it. Then you can use ICS (internet connection sharing application) so that you can share the internet access on the other machine.

minor setback guys,

when I do "ipconfig" in DOS, i get this message: "IP ConfigurationFatal Error / Cannot Read IP Configuration"

what is up with this ?

Have you checked your tcp settings on the 98 pc like I posted above?
You should boot to windows & do start - run - winipcfg.

I have tried them, except I didn't know what to put for "Windows NT Domain" under Client for Microsoft Networks component. Under TCP protocol for the ethernet card apapter, inside the DNS tab, I left it "disabled."

When I do "winipcfg", it lists my ip address, but for the Host Information, there are no DNS servers listed, and for Host Name it just says the name of my computer. The "Enable IP Routing" checkbox is also unchecked.

Any thoughts ppl?

Thanks.

You didn't answer my ?'s
Is this for work or home?
If home, are you using a HUB & ICS or a cable/dsl router?

If you're on a work netwk, you'll need to set the Client for MS Netwks to connect to your work's NT server domain.

If you're on a home netwk, there is a difference as to whether you're using ICS on a host pc with 2 nics & a hub or using a cable router.

by: JodacodaPosted on 2003-08-27 at 01:49:39ID: 9230626

This is for home.
Using cable router: [cable modem] --> [WAN port on router] ---> client comps

There is no ICS (the cable modem is always connected to internet)

going back to my prev question: When I do "winipcfg", it lists my ip address, but for the Host Information, there are no DNS servers listed, and for Host Name it just says the name of my computer. The "Enable IP Routing" checkbox is also unchecked.

What networking components do i need, and what should their settings be?

(I am not interested in file sharing)

Thank U.

AHA!  Which pc was the 1st one setup with your isp acct?  Disconnect all others from the router.  Get router's manual & goto the router's setup (open IE & goto addr 192.168.0.1)  find the option to clone mac addr from original pc used to setup isp acct.  Set router options to act as DHCP & DNS server, since the router provides all access to pc's on it.

I would then suggest that all pc's have their tcp settings set up as default, like

ip addr tab - obtain ip auto
wins tab - use dhcp for wins
gatw tab - blank
dns tab - disabled

by: mimicsuPosted on 2003-08-27 at 23:23:03ID: 9238043

Whew!  Did the default tcp prop's work ok after setting the router?

by: JodacodaPosted on 2003-08-28 at 12:59:05ID: 9243394

Yeah, it worked! Thanks a lot. I suspect that the problem was with the cable or a second router. The hardwiring used to be like this:

[cable modem] --> [WAN port on router ]
[some port on router]  -->  [another router] --> the comp

I used a different ethernet cable and connected the comp to the main router, and it just started working. I am guessing the the main router was already configured properly.
