not possible, M$ dont make it that easy, if you have this OS CD installed on any PC then goto:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion, and look on the right side for the key code, but if you aint, then i think you'r out of luck.

Hi shriramvenu,
Lost your Unlock Code?

Use this utility to retrieve the code

Magical Jellybean http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

The Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder is a freeware utility that retrieves your Product Key (cd key) used to install windows from your registry. It has the options to copy the key to clipboard, save it to a text file, or print it for safekeeping. It works on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Office 97, and Office XP.

There isn't a "key" on the CD, only some way of vertifing the key you entered is valid.
I used the same CD to install Win98 onto 6 different computers with each computer having it's own registration number. This was with an OEM version so I don't know if all version act the same or not.

While your information is correct, from the content of the posters question I would be suprised if they are on open licensing, if you install the OS on more than one machine without more than one single user license and your breaking the law.

Thanks for that bit of info, but if you have actually read my comment you would have seen where it said "with each computer having it's own registration number"
Not open license. I was trying to say that the number was not dependent upon the CD it came with. I used the same CD to install Win98 onto the 6 different computer, but when it asked for the product key I gave the one for each computer (each one different)

So how am I breaking the "law"

Please read comments before starting an attack towards me.

oh i see, in that case how does setup.exe  verify the cd-key? is there a list or something? no 1 of my pcz r using Win XP whereas d other one uses Win 98 1st edition. my cd is Second edition.

:0) NO Im not saying your breaking the law - perhaps I was a bit unclear :0)

All I was try in to point out was

yes a windows CD is a windows CD and is IN NO WAY joined a an unlock code - any valid unlock code will work

I was trying to illustrate to the poster that, this is open to anyone using the same unlock code on multiple PC's and that this is in violation of the licensing.

I was not trying to ditract from the validity of your post, just add to it :0)

>>>  oh i see, in that case how does setup.exe  verify the cd-key?

Roughly it passes the keys you enter into an algorithm.  If the algorithm likes them it lets you in.

Hello,

I recently purchased Win 98SE from an on-line dealer.  The product was shipped without the product key (cd key).  Repeated requests for assistance from the dealer have been unproductive.

I have a Toshiba laptop that has had the hard drive re-formatted that I want to install the OS on.
But, without the cd key, I don't know to get it done.

I have heard that Microsoft can issue a generic cd key using a code on the back of the cd.  I went to the MS site and learned that Win 98 is no longer covered by free support and they want $35.00 for tech assistance.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!!

Sincerely,
enjoyak

You probably bought an OEM CD.  OEM CDs do not include a license, just the cd.  You need to purchase a license seperately.
