Question

Blank Screen !

Asked by: dlyons

My minister telephoned this morning and said he is getting a blank screen on his monitor. I went to church and replaced monitor, but same result. Computer seems to fire up OK . This is not the blue screen of death, just an ordinary blank screen as if monitor was turned off. Any idea ? I don't even have a 98 CD anymore.
Thanks, Dave

Obviously video-related.  Is it an external (slot) video card?  Try replacing it.
Do you see anything as the machine is booting up (through DOS)?

Look in Device Manager for any red or yellow symbols indicating a hardware problem.  Or try replacing the video card.

asyscokid - how's he going to look in device manager when he's got no video? :)

dlyons - with the computer turned off and the replacement monitor - try hitting F8 just after you hear the initial Beep (or Beep-Beep depending on your system).  See if you have video here - if you do not, it's a bad video card (is he using a surge protector?)

Good Lord, what was I thinking!  My apologies.

Were you able to see BIOS output during POST?
Try to replace the video cable if it is separated from the monitor.
Bootup with a DOS diskette to see if you can see the C:\ command prompt.

If none of the above work... replace your video board.

cheers

Whats the monitors indicator light doing?

If it's not the montior, I would also suggest replacing the video card.

MONITOR light comes on. I will try F8 at start-up. Other than that I will try replacing video-card

@ asyscokid - ;-)

dlyons - the monitor you replaced it with - a known good one?  Also - since it didn't work - did you return it to the original location - still working?
If so, then it must be the video card/board - you have eliminated both Monitor and monitor cable here.
Only other thing would be bad power outlet?

by: GnartPosted on 2004-01-14 at 13:27:22ID: 10114850

If the MB has an onboard video, check BIOS to see if video has been redirected to the onboard interface instead of the add-on interface.  Did you get any output during BIOS POST stage?

cheers

My guess is that since the indicator light comes on, the montior should be fine.

Did you try and adjust the screen settings, such as brightness. (Probably the first thing you tried)
Is the connection tight?

Maybe try a diffirent video card. See if that works.
maybe try the monitor on another computer.

dlyons,

Have you solved your problem?

I asked the rev and he said it was a software problem.

by: GnartPosted on 2004-01-27 at 06:10:20ID: 10209393

A little surprise to hear that it's software (BIOS?) when the video didn't work during POST.  May be the BIOS has dual-video and the primary is being set to the wrong video.  If it's solved, go to community and ask for a close & refund.

cheers
