Office 2000 - data1.msi

Asked by: MikeM123

Os 98SE, when trying to update Office 2000 premium, I get asked to insert original cd (which is damaged) - looking for file DATA1.msi. Is there anywhere I can download either this file, or the full Office 2000 - I have contacted Microsoft - even though I have full serial numbers etc, they have ony offered one solution - buy the 2003 upgrade package!!! - is there any way around this please?

Thanks for your help

No you can not get the .MSI file anywhere legal without buying it, or at least we can not tell you where!
Is the O2K-P CD a upgrade or full install? And witch .MSI does it ask for? The OS or old Office MSI?

by: BillDLPosted on 2004-05-03 at 19:32:59ID: 10983144

The following link is to a .pdf file that explains the deployment of Office 2000 in detail.  Right-Click the link and select "Save target As" :

http://www.techsupportalert.com/pdf/e1146.pdf

Read about the significance of the file DATA1.MSI and you will see why this file cannot be legally shared or distributed.

Don't you know anybody with an Office 2000 Premium CD?  If you have a licence, than you can legitimately use any CD you have acquired or borrowed.  It's the licence that you own, not the CD.  The licence becomes effective when you install the product and, if it is the same version, then there's no problem, especially where it is an application no longer being sold as new.

The data1.msi file on the CD is only 2.28 MB in size, and only really contains the instructions for the setup.  It will still require the files on the CD, and if the CD is damaged, then even if you acquire the file you might end up with a half-baked installation with missing files that won't uninstall or repair properly if it ends up totally disfunctional.

If the CD is damaged to that extent, then why not try some of the tips for restoring damaged CD's eg. toothpaste!!!  Yes, toothpaste.  It worked for me once with an office 97 CD (legit one):

http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/38
or
http://www.bad-breath-fix.com/bad-breath-resources/31/fix-cd-with-toothpaste.html

or those spinning things that wipe and polish the surface.

http://www.exn.ca/Stories/2004/04/06/51.asp?t=dp

Of course, there is a risk of totally wrecking the cd, so perhaps you should attempt to copy ALL files (including hidden ones) into a folder on your hard drive and then burn to a CD for safekeeping before trying this.

A friend of mine had a PhotoShop CD (a copy :-) which got a deep scratch on the "label" side where the reflective layer seemed to be cut into.  He painted on a small blob of that silver conductive compound used for repairing circuit-board tracks or shielding cavities, and this allowed him to create a good copy.  Too much of it could cause the CD to run off-balance and, at 52x, it could fracture - so be careful.

Have you tried washing the CD very gently under running luke-warm water using household washing up liquid.  Good for removing greasy deposits, but it won't copy data.msi onto it :-)  Pat dry on non-fluffy kitchen roll paper.

You MAY be able to create a good copy using a bit-for-bit CD Copy application like CloneCD.  Sometimes the software will be able to read the data.

find a friend with the same version and burn it =]

if of course none of the above works

mattisflones.

Have you read my first linked document?

You asked:
"Which .MSI does it ask for? The OS or old Office MSI?".

Clearly the installation is asking for MS Office's DATA1.MSI file, because to my knowledge Windows 98 does not have a DATA1.MSI file on the CD and does not install one.

I suggested (about my linked .pdf file) "Reading about the significance of the file DATA1.MSI".

Page 2, centre column, 2nd paragraph.
Page 3, left column, section header "Administrative Install".

Note:  DATA1.MSI is NOT copied from the Office 2000 CD, but MUST be found before the installation can proceed.

This scenario is a common one experienced when Office SP updates like SP1 and SP2 are installed.  When installed by an administrator in a network setting, Office will work fine, but when run by a non admin, it keeps looking for DATA1.msi which is located in a directory that is either on a CD not at hand, or on the network where the non-admin user doesn't have access.

The MSI installer keeps running.  Often if you hit cancel enough times you can use Office, but many times not.  In THAT scenario, where DATA1.MSI can be copied to a folder C:\install  ,  the following .reg file would force it to look for it there:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\904000001E872D116BF00006799C897E\SourceList]
"PackageName"="DATA1.MSI"
"LastUsedSource"=hex(2):6e,00,3b,00,31,00,3b,00,43,00,3a,00,5c,00,49,00,6e,00,\
  73,00,74,00,61,00,6c,00,6c,00,5c,00,00,00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\904000001E872D116BF00006799C897E\SourceList\Media]
"DiskPrompt"="Microsoft Office 2000 Premium"
"1"="O9PRMcd01;1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\904000001E872D116BF00006799C897E\SourceList\Net]
"1"=hex(2):63,00,3a,00,5c,00,49,00,6e,00,73,00,74,00,61,00,6c,00,6c,00,5c,00,\
  00,00

In THIS case, MikeM123 states "when trying to update Office 2000 premium, I get asked to insert original cd .... looking for file DATA1.MSI".

In my opinion, the question has been answered adequately by my comment.

"Don't you know anybody with an Office 2000 Premium CD?  If you have a licence, than you can legitimately use any CD you have acquired or borrowed".

So?, the asker does not return, therefore no solution is provided...  Since MS have not provided any solution to the asker theres got to be more to this and more info is needed... (Or else MS would have explained this..)

Thus, i dont see any reason for making this PAQ`d and searchable.
You have a good explaination witch should be PAQ`d in a string that is worth something to future searchers..

05:55... Yawn.. Cofee... Server crash... Dang.. 1,5 Hrs to fix it... uhh... :-)

Sorry bout the disagreement, i`m just fed up of crappy PAQ`s that dont give a question->solution process..

by: BillDLPosted on 2004-05-26 at 20:08:43ID: 11168007

Hope you got the server fixed.  Actually, I just discovered an online resource branded as "MS Office 2000 SP2 DATA1.msi fix" and the downloadable .zip file contains DATA1.MSI.  Pity about the restrictions on passing such a url, but for good reason I suppose.

by: mattisflonesPosted on 2004-05-27 at 04:32:00ID: 11170262

Got it yes! :-) As for the disagreement i withdraw it... Its worty a PAQ and the skie are blue and birds singing and everything is gooood... Hot town, summer in the city dumtidumtidum...
I would like that link if you could bother mail it to me... :-) Shhh...
