The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. win 98 sys randomly hangs, no pattern

Windows 98se system.  System will arbitrarily hang with no rhyme or reason.  I suspect that it is a conflict between an ATI graphics card and the Direct X system, but what do I know?.  I am somewhat of a novice at this but up to this point I have. Formatted hard drive and reloaded system twice.  Swapped ATI card out with another graphic card.  Downloaded and installed all latest drivers for video card and downloaded and installed latest direct X from microsoft. Checked out the Western Digital HD with on line diagnostics from WD. Ran scan disk with auto fix. Changed acceleration to none from full. Running display with 32 bit true color 800x600 pixels.  It has no virus protection system or any other programs loaded back on it yet, other than the 98se and drivers for the video card, modem and sound card. Tried numerous times to find a log on Drwatson....have not been able to either generate a log.....or in my stupidty...not been able to find it...one of the two.  I removed all the cards that I possibly could when reinstalling the system.  All except the Video card (possible culprit) because I would have no way of seeing what is going on without it.  When this thing decides to hang.....there is nothing to do but power it down and reboot......no way, that I know, of being able to get a reading off of any diagnostic programs since I lose all info when I have to power down....short of kicking this thing out in the yard...or using it for a boat anchor.....any suggestions on how to find this problem?  Or better yet, the exact spot to hit it with a hammer that will render it unfixable and still look like an accident.  Any help appreciated.
