The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Urgent - System hangs at startup

We got hit by some s/w that constantly brings up popups.  I was able to identify the spyware but for the life of me don't remember the name, U<numbers & letters>.exe.  The site that identified the spyware and said how it was to be removed described the usual infection method as a popup that comes from porn sites, although we don't visit those...unless my son who's home from college sneaked a peak, but I doubt it.

Anyway I removed it and all seemed well for a day.  Soon the system was crawling.  The Google toolbar's popup blocker was disabled and we were getting popups from other sites.  I uninstalled the Google toolbar and reinstalled it, and the popup blocker was re-enabled.  Next I went to the microsoft site and scanned for updates.  There were several available including SP1 for IE6.  That had to be installed seperately which I did.  It required a reboot and the "updating system settings" dialog came up and completed normally.  The system continued to come up but now hangs near the end of the startup process, the icon bar on the bottom far right is empty but expanded as though to hold several icons.

I tried rebooting into safety mode then rebooting normally, but it always hangs at the same spot, just doesn't do the "updating system settings" dialog since that completed normally.

HELP!  Can anyone help?
