Do you have the Windows 98 CD?  You can reinstall Windows 98 as many times as you want.  Your computer may even be able to boot from the CD.  Check the boot order in your BIOS.  If you need a boot disk, you can get one at www.bootdisk.com.

Boot up with the OS SC or disks, then you will be able to do it properly..

ive tried, but it tells me i already have windows installed and it is recommended to run setup from cd.

If i ignore then it asks where to install windows as if i am preparing a new copy.

That's what you want to do:  reinstall Windows 98 into C:\Windows.  You won't lose any other programs or data.

Hi ironbut,

>>If i ignore then it asks where to install windows as if i am preparing a new copy.<<
Win98 won't give a message like "do you want to make a repair installation"
Just let it install in exactly the same location as the original installation (probably c:\windows) you'll have to change the location as it might want to install to c:\windows.000 which you really don't want to happen.

Greetings,

LucF

Symptoms:

When Windows starts, in both normal and safe mode, the background appears and then the start menu appears and disappears in an instant.  There are no icons on the desktop, and in the Task Manager nothing is listed.

Solution:

Boot to a command prompt by restarting the computer and holding down the Ctrl key until you see a Startup Options Menu.

Select option 5.

At the command prompt enter:

C:\>cd windows
C:\WINDOWS>edit system.ini

In the text editor change the line shell=explorer.exe to shell=winfile.exe .

Press Alt+F then Alt+X and select YES to save and exit.

Restart the computer and let it boot to Windows File Manager.

Check to see if you can find a file named shdocvw.dll in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.

If it can't be found use the System File Checker tool (sfc) to extract Shdocvw.dll and Setupx.dll from the Windows 98 installation CD to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.

Open Notepad and edit the system.ini file to change the line shell=winfile.exe to shell=explorer.exe .

Save the changes then exit File Manager and restart the computer.

You may want to try to restore the registry first before doing a reinstall:
boot into a DOS screen or to a bootdisk
At the C:\WINDOWS command prompt type SCANREG /RESTORE (note there is a space between SCANREG and the forward slash(/).
Then press enter. You will get a blue screen with the dates listed.
Highlight an appropriate date (prior to your problem). The restore button will also be highlighted.
Just press enter. Give it few seconds. It will return with a message. YOU HAVE RESTORED A PREVIOUS VERSION OF YOUR REGISTRY WHICH CONTAINS NO ERRORS.
If you receive this message it worked and it will prompt you to RESTART.
If the operation failed it will tell you. Try another date. If they all fail to restore. Return to the DOS prompt and type SCANREG /FIX. If this fails to initialize, you have a much more serious problem.

On a side note as well, if the installation CD is an OEM version then in order to reinstall the OS over top of the old copy , you must first rename the file "win.com" to something like "win.old"   you could also delete that file but it is better to just rename it until the install is complete.
Then when it askd for install directory make sure it is just "windows" and not "windows.000" or something else.
