The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Woindows 98SE shuts down at random

Asked by thedslguy in Windows 98 Operating System

I have a customer with a Windows  98 machine.  It reboots at random times with no warning.  On reboot it runs scandisk.  I found a wire draped across the processor fan causing a slowdown but no apparent damage and figured it was just an over-hot processor.  I installed a case fan to assist with cooling and returned the machine (after, of course, re-routing the errant wire so the processor fan spins.  About 10 days later he called me back to say it is doing it again.. He left it running like this and I went in.  I got to see it and by this time it was going to scandisk, making it to about 20% and rebooting.  That is to say it wouldn’t finish scandisk.  It rebooted 8 times after making it to about 20% in Scandisk so I shut it off and took it to my shop.  When I turned it on it ran just fine. I left it on with SETI@home running to tax the system and it ran for 3 days straight without a hitch.  I took it back and about 10 days later he said it is doing it again.  He can’t leave it with me for 10 days to 2 weeks for me to have it in my shop with the fault and I can’t work on it in his office.  This means I can’t se the problem when and where I can fix it.  Any ideas about this one??
