My system has a mind of it own and shuts down unexpectedly. I'm losing my work and my mind.

Hi all,
I am trying to assist a friend of mine who is having trouble with his system. I upgraded his Ram for him recently and also his power supply as his fan was noisy, but his problem continues as follows:

System = Pentium3 1.2mhz celeron (now) 512 mgs ram 30 gig maxtor H DD, running 98se all patches and updates loaded. The major use is for his family tree program file size 500mg and occassionally playing online games.

Problem: While using family tree program unexpectedly a white dialogue box pops up with the only button to choose from being close. If you hit close it goes to blue screen with OE error. If you hit enter it comes up with another white window saying IE is low on memory and close or ignore and the system locks.
ctrl, Alt, delete and the system reboots rather than offer the dialogue box with not responding option. It mostly happens when in Family Tree Maker, but has even happened playing solitaire and on the net.
I have Nortons security 04 loaded, spybot, and highjack this which I run weekly. I will add the latest run of highjackthis. Can anyone help with his problem. Greg
