I ran Windows 98SE with IE5.5 without any problems. I then upgraded to IE6sp1. The IE6 installation went flawlessly, but since then Windows Explorer opens only with the left pane, the Folder View, collapsed, meaning that I have to expand the C: drive manually before I can view the folders after every time I start Windows Explorer. This is not only 1,000s of clicks for my injured hand (explosion accident survivor - 4 years in the hospital, 62 operations, lost one eye, cornea burned & scarred on the other eye, both hands quite hit), but also a risk, because I have 3 more mirror drives in this PC for 3 days back instant backups. The SATA RAID is so fast that I may accidentally open a folder on the wrong drive if I am tired or work too quickly. I fiddled around with Folder Options "Remember Each Folder's View Settings" as well as with all the file associations etc. - no matter what I do, there is no way to make Windows Explorer open with the C: drive expanded - it only opens with all 4 drives collapsed in Folder View to the left.
I have also tried all possible combos of the switches in explorer:
EXPLORER.EXE [/n][/e][,/root,(object)][
[,/select]
,{sub object}]
On my 2 older PCs which are still running IE5.5, the switches were all set to /n,/e,/C:\ and there Windows Explorer opens correctly with the left Folder pane expanded. My new PC did that, too, but only as long as I was running IE5.5. After installing IE6 it showed everything normally in the right, the file window, but did not expand C:\ in the folder pane any more.
So, I assume from the other 2 older PCs that /n,/e,/C:\ is the correct setting.
It is strange that even if I leave the switches out altogether, the 2 older PCs still show C:\ correctly expanded, i.e., exactly the same way as they do WITH the /n,/e,/C:\ is settings - and it is interesting to note that explorer opens FASTER without any switches being set. Unfortunately, the new PC post IE6 install without any switches also opens faster, but still C: is only highlighted, but NOT expanded in the left Folder View, so, the error carries analogously over to the new install.
Are there any other superseding settings, such as in an .ini file or the registry or does anyone know of any other way to control the behavior of explorer when it opens besides the switches, or is there another reason for this?
Thank you very much in advance.
Sincerely,
Bernard
