I run Windows 98SE and upgraded from IE5.5 to IE6. I ran the latest version of CoolWebShredder and got to CWS.Mupdate when CoolwebShredder hung. After that everything hung, so I had to reboot. The next time I tried to open IE6 I got the error dialog box with the usual text "MS IE has encountered a problem and needs to close… Restart MS IE… Send Error Report… Don't Send…" and no way out of this cycle. I have all the latest AdAware SE, SpyBot, spywareblaster, update and run religiously ater each session - trouble is, they found NOTHING... and I booted 100 times in between, see nothing running in msconfig or <Ctrl><Alt><Del>
I also got once a message referring to ole32.dll but this went by so fast and did not come again that I now don't know what the context was. I also ran SFC a couple of times, but SFC found nothing and used the repair option in Add/Remove a couple of times. But even weirder is that my preferred method of fixing a hanging browser, namely to revert to the previous version and then re-install IE6 cleanly, did not work either: When I go to Add/Remove, and since you cannot uninstall IE, I chose revert to previous version. So the uninstall starts, but then even that hangs and gives me this message:
"A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You need to restart your computer to complete that installation before running IE setup. Setup will now close."
And no matter what I do, I can't get out of this - I restarted many times, checked what is running etc, ran sfc, ran the repair option 10 times, all came back with no error, ran even CoolWebShredder several times, goes fine now, AdAware, Spybot, I just installed AVG7 yesterday with the latest build and virus data base, it all runs fine - no virus, nothing, but I can't open IE6 and I can't uninstall it. Is there a way to interrupt this?
One more clue: Then I got the browser to open by repeating the error dialog box so fast that the system began to hang, then looked at File>Properties and learned that it tried to open the following URL in the address field:
res://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SH
DOCLC.DLL\
dnserror#
http://default.home/So every time it opens, it tries to go to default.home which does not seem to be a valid Internet address.
After that I ran AdAware SE and SpyBot in Safe Mode, I also downloaded Winsockfix.exe and ran that, but the condition remains – click on the IE6 icon and the error dialog box comes up.
I also saw that shdoclc.dll is an old application extension with a date of 8/29/02 and it does reside in
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
so, what does the above URL try to do and why can't I get rid of it with all my tools, incuding CoolWebShredder, which also comes up clean... (?) Please, advise.
I have the ieradicator tool, but I do not know how to use it and worry that this might be a radical step. If you insist that I use it, please, give me instructions.
To sum it up:
1) Can I interrupt this "busy with a previous install" message so that I can revert to IE5.5 and then install cleanly IE6 over it?
2) Can I somehow destroy my current installation manually to force SFC or Add/Remove Repair to work?
3) Or is there another preferred way of doing this?
Thank you very much in advance.
Sincerely,
Bernard
