Can I check for and remove spyware myself?

When I installed Norton Antivirus system on my computer it made it run so slow, so I removed it. Now (a year later) my computer is very slow. Part of the problem may be the scan disc and defragmenter aren't doing their jobs correctly, but my boys have installed Kazaa twice (and I have removed it twice). Could there be spyware (or viruses) still left from Kazaa (or other places)? Is there a way for me to check for and remove these things myself, or do I need to put Norton back on? If there is a way to do it myself, please give step-by-step directions keeping in mind that I am a computer-clueless person. Thank-you
