Hello everyone.
I've run into a strange problem with a client's computer. The computer is an AMD system (can't remember processor speed) with 256MB PC2100 DDRAM running Windows 98SE. I installed AntiVir 9x, AdAware SE, and Spybot to remove virii, adware, and spyware. The client insists that I keep their copy of Norton Internet Security 2005 with NAV 2005 installed (one of those sorts of people). I am confident that the computer is free of virii, ad software, and malware in general. However, it's the Norton software I'm worried about.
Here's the problem:
The Windows printer (the model I'm trying to get work is a USB HP DeskJet 960c) will work fine when I print something from say Works - or even a printer test page. However, once I try to print something from the internet, the computer stops responding to the point where it has to be rebooted via the button (it seizes up so bad it won't respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL) This happens both in Internet Explorer AND Mozilla Firefox, so I know it's not a problem with those programs specifically. However, the first program that seems to cause the computer to seize up is Norton's notoriously craptastic ccApp.exe that serves as the hub to their entire security suite. So, this exe file crashes and the rest of the computer goes down with it. However, removing it is not an option, and I'm not 100 percent sure that it actually IS this process that's causing the problem. I just started working on this problem today - but I can already sense it's going to be a complete pain, so I figured i'd ask you experts if you're familiar with any problems like this one and take some vicodin as a preventative measure.
I've searched the Symantec web site and there are no relevant topics that address a problem like this. I've Google'd it, Yahoo'd it, and now EE'd it, but still, no luck.
I suppose my next step will be to upgrade the printer drivers, and make sure the USB drivers for the MoBo are working correctly... However, they (the printers) WERE working fine before the system was crippled by virus activity. I'm trying to stop short of a complete system format (client has monetary restrictions).
Please, any help with this is greatly appreciated.
