Boot up problem

I'm running win98 on two drives.
First master (C) is a 50Gb harddisk I use to work with.
Second master (D) is my first 4Gb harddisk, which I seldom use.
(Except now that is).
Yesterday, while starting just like any other day I got my pc asking
"please enter your MS-DOS prompt", what I was willing to do, but refused
whatever I entered. No way to boot up.
I did all the steps one does in a situation like this, nothing doing.
With a win98 boot floppy I can "see" the disc and its content in MS-DOS, but that is all.
Booting up D, C only works in safe modus. In explorer I can see the failing C
disk and its content, i can even transfer maps to D.
Virus-control, spyware-control, disk-control, registry-control and whatever :
no errors.
This is driving me mad:-) I have backups of all personal files, so I tried to
re-install windows98....while running setup.exe all freezes.
I tried some rescue and emergency boot disks : no way....
Anybody any idea how to make this disk make available again???
