Question

NIC installation on Win98

Asked by: geraldo67

I have two OS's in my computer (Win98 and XP) as you know XP automicatelly detects all hardware and installs all necessary drivers, whereas Win98 doesnt, even though is suppose to be PNP..well my problem is I dont have internet connection in my 98 os because it didnt detect the NIC when I first installed the os. I know the NIC is a Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet Nic, but I dont know how to install it cause I dont have the original CD with the drivers. I went to driversguide.com to get'em and they were available. My question is how do I do it?? cause I have never had to install anything on this old OS. Please help.

Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet Nic are very often seen in modern systems and it shouldn't be the problem at all to locate appropriate drivers ( and they all fit single floppy disk I think)
You can go on line with your Win XP download approptiate driver for your Realtek NIC written specifically for WIndows 98 copy driver file(s) to your floppy  or (if you can access Windows 98 partitions from within WinXP ) to some of WIndows 98 folders, reboot to Windows 98 and install Realtek driver whether via "Driver update" feature for unknown device in Device Manager or via Add New Hardware wizzard in Control Panel.

Once you have downloaded Realtec NIC device driver unzip it and copy files to the floppy ( or to the folder you can access when running Win98 envirnment).
From device manager select  PCI network adapter or unknown device and delete it.
Reboot PC an Windows98 should detect the card. When prompted for the location of the driver navigate to the folder where driver files are stored and install proces will start automatically.

>>   I went to driversguide.com to get'em and they were available. My question is how do I do it <<
you download the file to a folder on your disc (create the "Realtec" folder eg)
if the file is zipped, unzip it to this folder.
now, if it has a setup file, you can use this to install it; otherwise, there are 2 possibilities :
1-it is installed in device manager as "unknown device" : right click it, select properties, select change driver, and point it to the Realtec folder for the driver
2- delete all "unknown " devices, or devices with an exclamation mark or red cross from device manager,
close device manager
go to control panel> new hardware and when it asks for the driver, point it to the Realtec folder

I have tried all of this and it doesn't work, I went to my device manager and there were tree exclamation marks, but none of them was the NIC, it  read "Other devices" one was the PCI Ethernet, second the same thing and the third was the PCI Audio Device so I went to my network adapter and deleted, then I reboot my computer expecting  to detect the NIC but, it didnt happen, so then I went to "control panel, add hardware,  I want to select the harware from list, Choose Network Adapter, Have Disk."..and all those steps right, then it asked my to insert my WIN98 which I also did,,,then it copied some files and finally I saw a window saying my hardware has been installed. It didnt ask me to reboot, but I did any ways, so I went back to device manager one more time to verify the NIC was successfully installd, but there was NOTHING!! I have done this before but, for some reason it doesnt see my network adapter..any suggestions??

All right ,then:
Remove all "Other devices"  except PCI Ethernet  (this is your NIC)
the follow the steps described in  nobus' post :
"right click on Other devices , select Properties, select Driver, select the option Update  and point it to the Realtec folder for the driver. If the driver is correct it will install it and "Other devices" will disapear from the list but new entry in Device Manager tree under Network devices will show up.
Then you have to configure your NIC through Networking in the Windows Control Panel.

Use the same procedure to reinstall/update your sound card  driver

Thanks, it really worked out, but there is only one thing that keeps showing up everytime I reboot my computer. It says computer has found new hardware "PCI ethernet" but, in reality there is nothing missing cause everything in my computer is working just fine. Any idea what might be the problem?.

Sure, as you mentioned before you had TWO yellow splatted "Other Devices" listed in the Device manager. OK?!
It means that Windows registerred same hardware (Network card) twice and we just fixed one of them; other one still remains in the Windows Registry and I think it's under:
HKEY_LOCALMACHINE/Hardware/Enum/Network
and
HKEY_LOCALMACHINE/Hardware/Enum/PCI
but I can't tell you for sure since I don't know which one pertains to the correctly installed driver.
There are two occurences of the same hardware in the registry so thta's why Windows tries to install it over and over again.
So I would go , again, in the Device manager go to Other devices right click on yellow splatted PCI ethernet ,Click on Properties and select the option :
Disable in this hardware profile
Done.
Test the NIC and if it works do not bother with it anymore.
------------------------------------------------
Other than that we can try to remove registry entries pertaining to NIC but it would be bit dangerous job!

----------------------------------------------
One more thing to consider is to reinstall/update driver for the device, when prompted by Windows Add New Hardware Wizzard, but then, you'll have multiple occurences for the same device which might cause ( sooner or later) problems in the future.
