Epson Stylus C80 USB Printer gives "Communication Error" when trying to print

OS: Win 98 (NOT SE)

This printer works when I plug it into a Win XP machine. The printer is connected to an old generic Pentium P1 (?) computer.

The history on the computer is that it used to work on another hard drive, until it went south. I installed Win 98, First Edition, on the new hard drive. Everything else works fine on the refurbished machine, except this printer.

I have downloaded the driver and installed it.

We are tied to this old machine and the old Win 98 OS, due to cost constraints on the owner (not me, a customer).

I don't know how to proceed. I've checked the BIOS and enabled the printer as ECP/EPP. No luck. Any ideas? Thanks.
