  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Scandisk in Win98SE in infinite loop

I run Windows 98SE with a Promise drive array as drive C.  I have also drives D, E, and F.  Scandisk runs fine in DOS mode on all of them, but "hangs" in Windows 98SE and that only for the C: drive.  I do scans and defrags monthly, all went well since I got this PC, it has never done that.  I kept disk space low to avoid problems.  The 2 WD Raptors 10,000 RPM are 76 GB each, but I broke them down so that there is a C: drive with 77 GB and a F: drive with 61 GB.  The D: and E: drive are separate drives with 40 GB each.  All scan and defrag fine, only the C: drive seems to "hang" in Windows on "Checking folders", toggling every 2 minutes between "Checking file allocation tables" and "Checking folders" although in DOS mode scandisk cannot find anything wrong with it.  If I try to defrag the C: drive, it goes on endlessly with "Checking drive for errors" and never gets to defrag.

It is weird, because everything runs really well.  P4 3.4GHz, 500 MB memory,  IE5.5, eTrust ezAntivirus, ZoneAlarm (free version), BHOdemon, Secretmaker, SpyWareBlaster,  AdAware SE free version and SpyBot, all updated daily and latest versions.

SFC runs without reporting anything wrong with any system file.

I can't find any fractional files in root either, usually ending in .000, .001 etc.

What could cause this?  Thank you very much in advance.
