Cant Re-install Win98

I have a machine running Win98. A few days ago I started getting error messages when say I opened control panel etc. So I decided to re-install Win 98. At first I couldnt. At the beginning the installation starts normally but after clicking next on the next button on the blue setup screen , it comes up with the error message saying cant continue because the drive might have compression software. It then only gives the option to quit. Now I cant boot in Normal or safe mode and cant re-install. Has anyone any suggestions? Most of the stuff I have is backed up, but the most recent data is not. I need to get into win98 to retrieve this and then do a clean install.
