Using shortcuts modifies them

Sometimes PIF and LNK shortcut dates show as
modified after they have been used. I am aware
that in the past this was a problem after drag and
drop. But, I have only clicked with mouse to use.

Perhaps only the modified date is changed, but I
can't take a chance, so after each incident I re-create
the shortcut from scratch and save two backups, one
on a write-protected floppy. Also, I set the attribute
to READ-ONLY. In a pinch I could start using the
shortcuts from the write-protected floppy.

As far as I know this is a recent problem, within
the past month or so.

If this is a virus, it is fairly new. I did see a site
in Russia that talks about hacking like this, but
I was reluctant to open it because of the location.

Have checked with HijackThis, Ad-Aware, Pest
Patrol, and AVG7 by GriSoft. Also using WinPatrol.
Nothing turns up.

System is Windows 98 SE, so I can't use the
rootkit revealer utilities or the Microsoft "beta"
anti-spyware program.

Already have several of the SysInternals utilties,
but tracing the path is a pain unless I know
what to look for.
