Why does my screen keep freezing?

Hello, no doubt this is one of the most commonly asked questions and no doubt there are a million different reasons, but I would be grateful for suggestions as to the most likely reasons why my screen freezes quite frequently.

I do clean, check, attend generally to the pc daily so it's not as though the cache is clogged or anything like that.

It's an old system (1997) with a very small master disk (C) and much larger secondary disk (D). I'm cable broadband, daughter uses MSN Messenger often, Norton 2003 Systemworks, IE6.

I would be most grateful for any suggestions in *simplest possible language*.
