Eventhough it is a network printer , but the setup of it requires to install it as local printer.
On a winXp computer what I do is that in Add printer wizard I select add printer , local and then I create a port (TCP/IP) and enter the value
(10.0.0.4) and then I|select have disk (the driver of the printer ) then I select the correct driver and that's it.
So the printer eventhough it is on a network , is installed on each PC as 'local' printer.
In fact it is a photocopier & Printer (SHARP SR 337) .
and No the setup CD coming with it includes only drivers for Win9X and Win2000 and WinXP.
"I need to "create" a TCP /IP port on win98."
That is exactly your problem. You need a TCP/IP port driver. If one was not supplied with the printer you may want to try this. http://lpr.brooksnet.com/v

Is your printer equipped with the LAN port? (I was unable to find it's specifications).
In case the printer is connected to some kind of a print server, you should look for software specific to the print server.
But, I agree most of the print servers use LPR or LPD, so generic driver can be a solution.
THE PRINTER -SHARP AR-337 is in fact a photocopier- that has a lan card.
on the photocopier I have the option to setup the ip and subnet mask.
Now once I do that , let's say on a win2000 station or XP I go to printers->add new Printer->I select Local Printer->Next I select Create new port and from the drop down I select Standard TCP/IP port and then a new wizard opens ... I type here the IP address (that I have set on the photocopier..).. and from now on I install then the appropriate driver of the printer. (whether xp or 2000..)
I hope that I could explain exactly the pb.
Now it's much more clear. I was looking for a SHARP SR 337, as you wrote in previous post.
Anyway, SHARP AR-337 printer is supporting LPD UNIX standard, which is built in Windows 2000/XP. You need a LPD software virtual client driver for Windows 98 system.
Also, I found, the Sharp is supporting with special AR-LX2 external print controller compatible drivers. I do not know what is AR-LX2, but it can be the printer network controller.

Well, the quick link to the driver page is not working, I'm afraid.
You will have to navigate to the drivers section yourself on

It would be good to find a freeware LPR/LPD client software. I tried to do so, but I failed.
I'm using a PrintMate or SOHOmate LPR/LPD driver, wchich came with my print server capable hardware router. All SMC based routers are shipped with the PrintMate.
Anyway, the software works, but it is not 100% stable. A printer error condition can cause the driver to hang. Further printing requires computer rebooting, to work. So, I'm looking for a good LPD client software, as well.
Hey, this is still open.. what's the status? Any new development? I would like to table this or help you out. If there is a valid answer could you please grade accordingly. If there were many input from other's splitting the points would be good as we invested our time in helping you out. Please advise.

What printer are you using? Does it have a supporting utility application that will create the TCP/IP port for you? For example, HP has JetAdmin. Report back with you printer manufactuer and model.
