The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Can SFC be run in DOS (from boot floppy) under Windows 98SE

System File Checker runs in Windows 98 SE (and probably 98) from an option within the System Information Utility available in Accessories/System Tools. I have a system that will not boot due to Explorer.exe being missing (per pop-up error message at boot) so I can not boot Windows and hence cannot run SFC that way.

(1) Can I boot from a Win 98SE boot floppy, and run sfc or sfc /f or whatever options are available from the DOS prompt. I believe that sfc runs under DOS in Win XP; I am not sure the same is true under Win 98 SE. There are two questions here. (A) Runs under DOS (B) Runs under DOS when booted from boot floppy, not in a working (i.e bootable) Win98 SE system. Please note the latter when answering.

(2) SFC as in the first paragraph of this Question has an option to replace ONE system file ONLY. You browse to that file (ex. in System32 folder or wheverever) and then that ONE file ONLY is replaced. If the answer to (1) above is YES, then what is the option to sfc when run inside DOS that causes this mode to be available (and I assume I cannot browse but must type in the full path of the file I want to replace). Of course I WANT TO USE THIS FOR explorer.exe, the missing file !! If that ONE FILE REPLACE option is not available then I will use the general SFC "fix" option instead.

The entire point of the above is to save the time (and risk, it does not always work) to do a Win98 SE Repair install; I have a Win 98 SE full install CD available to me.
