The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Win98 as bootable working system

Asked by AmigoJack in Windows 98 Operating System

Tags: win98

first of all: i dont want a win98-bootable "installation" disc or similar. this means i dont want to repair, install or rescue something. im not fully sure wheather its really possible, but there must have been at least one solution around (unfortunately this link is dead:  http://www.cl.uni-heidelberg.de/~breubeck/winbootcd/winbootcd.htm).

i want a win98 disc which acts itself as a working system. the special thing is i need win98 (or win98SE) on cd, it should NOT be installed on the computer itself. thus, a cd should serve it (and that also means a bootable cd). if you dont really know what im talking about, search for "Knoppix" (its linux, but i want it for win98[SE]). several questions come to my mind about the realization of this: which files constantly are constantly modified by windows and thus cant be on the disc? how do i combine the booting part with (maybe) an image of an already installed win98? can the swp-file be disabled (i might also accept it to lay it somewhere else as long as it doesnt need to be C:\)?

the background for this wish is that i have my notebook with xp installed. its more a working machine and i really cannot consider to parallely install winxp and win98. i have done that at home on my tower and there it also works fine, but its not an option for my notebook - please dont ask why. dos-emulators or other "tools" are also not acceptable, since theyre consuming too much power for too small and ugly results. the best way to imagine is to use thin win98-cd for games. i could put them somewhere (lets say on D:\ or E:\, altogether with maybe the swp-file - of course as FAT32 partition) and the win98 itself only needs the cd as source.

has someone knowledge of how to achive this? or is there a tutorial around? i mean i have nero and win98 to make my own cd - to not rely on a ready-made image which would inflict copyrights...
