Question

Just formatted win98SE but Unable to reinstall the network adapter

Asked by: myplace

Hi,

I formatted my old computer (by that I mean restoring the computer to its factory state using a recovery cd).  Someone suggested me to use a program called driver magician to backup the drivers before formatting, so I did that.  But after I've formatted the PC, the PCI network card driver still couldn't be installed. What to do? The name of the card is 3Com EtherLink III ISA (3C509b-TPO) in PnP mode. I did not remove the PCI network card when I was formatting.  Should I have removed the PCI card before doing that?

I downloaded a folder from driverguide.com for my adapter but I don't know how to use it. It's called  disk2.zip from http://members.driverguide.com/drive...?driverid=6287 I don't know what to do next. I'm new to this... After the first time I formatted the computer, windows was able to detect the adapter, but it doesn't detect the card anymore and it's no longer being shown on device manager.

Start by redoing therestore wth minimal hardware, or after removing the PCI card.

Restore, DO NOT use the old drivers. After Windows is working well, visit Windows Update to bring the OS up to date.

ALWAYS reboot when asked to.

When finished updating, try installing the NIC.

Latest drivers available here if required:

3Com EtherLink III ISA (3C509b-TPO) in PnP mode is mine.

Is the PCI cartd seen in Control Panel > System > Device Manager?

Check also Device Manager in Safe Mode after tapping F8 at startup.

Post back your findings please.

I would disconnect the Nic card through the control panel.
Next unzip the folder in a folder called NIC
Next reboot the PC
When the PC asks for the software, just point it to the right direction

Sincerely
