Question

Trouble finding correct drivers for IBM Aptiva 2165-11A

Asked by: farniente

My brother recently bought an old IBM Aptiva 2165-11A which he basically needed to apply for jobs.  He just requires a connection to the internet and word processing.  On the weekend I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows98se, but I am now finding major difficulties finding the correct modem driver and graphics driver for the machine other than the ones supplied by Microsoft.  None of the Microsoft drivers seem to work.  The video graphics driver only seems to give 16 or 2 colors with 640x400 resolution and although the modem drivers load OK when it comes to connecting to the internet I am told that there is a problem with the modem.

If someone could point me in the correct direction to download the right drivers for both the modem and graphics adapters, cause I haven't had much success.

Hi nobus thanks for your reply - I tried these drivers from the site above and installed them, but guess what - they didn't work !!!

by: nobusPosted on 2006-12-21 at 23:49:19ID: 18185749

then i suggest trying another video card, and modem to be sure.

If it is a WinModem (ie. a software modem that shares its resources with Windows files) rather than a standard hardware modem, then then there is an issue with registry entries being retained.

Open the file on the Win98 CD:
CD:\tools\mtsutil\mtsutil.txt
and scroll down to the section header 2nd from the bottom entitled:
WMREMOVE.INF - REMOVE THE WINMODEM REGISTRY ENTRY
Follow the instructions and then restart the system.

If the system IS using a WinModem, then for a very small cost you can buy a standard PCI Modem that would be preferable.

As far as the graphics are concerned, can you describe how you went about trying to reinstall the new driver from the IBM support pages, and perhaps provide a link to the version you tried.

Hi there BillDL - I have opened the computer and the phone line is plugged into the back of the computer into a card that slots into one of the PCI slots inside the computer mother board.

There is a thing that I should mention.  Originally the computer was bought with Windows98 installed, but had a whole load of stuff and rubbish on it so I suggested to my brother we should do a complete clean install and load WindowsME which we did and the only problem we had was once again the graphics.  However, the modem worked beautifully.

My brother just didn't like WindowsME, why I don't know??  He asked me to install Windows98se, which I have a copy of.  I did a complete clean install of Windows98se - totally erasing the hard drive using a disk wipe program and then installing the new operating system.

This time when trying to connect to the internet the computer displayed a message saying that the modem was not responding.  I checked everything out and enlisted the assistance of my ISP to check on their end as well.  Everything - the ISP, settings and all networking type things were all set correctly and working.  However, no matter what I tried I could not get a network connection.

Does WindowsME have the driver for this modem?  If so how do I find where it is??

For the graphics download Everest http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Run this and it should identify the graphics chipset.  Once identified the Windows 98SE drivers can be found for that chipset.  It may identify the modem as well and the drivers can be found for that as well.

OK I have downloaded AIDA32 which was the for-runner to Everest.  What do I look under for the modem and graphic.  I have tried this and what I thought was the graphics adapter (SIS 530) didn't do much.  I still couldn't change the screen resolution or the number of colors.

by: dbruntonPosted on 2006-12-22 at 23:15:54ID: 18190972

click on Display --> PCI/AGP and it should identify the graphics adaptor

For Modem (can't verify this cause I don't have one) try

Devices --> Window Devices or
Devices --> Physical Devices

http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/sis530.html for the SIS 530

If the executable doesn't install, try the update driver method.

Control Panel --> System --> Device Manager --> Display Adapter

Right click on the display adpator --> Properties --> Driver --> Update Driver --> Next --> Display a list of all drivers in a specific location --> Next --> Have Disk --> Browse and find the location of the unzipped files.  You may have to look into a couple of folders until you get an OK button. Click on OK.

No guarantee on this method.

If AIDA32 is telling you that the graphics chipset is a SiS530, then that's pretty easy to get Win98se drivers:

http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/sis530.html
This just goes to the direct download link for version 1.08e:
http://driver2.sis.com/graphic/igp/530/530_108.zip

Go here and choose the options: Win98se > IGP Graphics Driver > SiS530 and it will lead you to the download link:
http://www.sis.com/download/

I believe that the first thing you need to do is install the drivers for your motherboard's CHIPSET.  Win98se supplies basic drivers for SOME chipsets, but certainly not all of them.

AIDA32 should be able to tell you the make, possibly model, and most likely the actual chipset that the motherboard is based on.  When you know those details, you should be able to find the correct drivers and install them.

The chipset drivers ensure that all the slots and such are able to interface correctly with Windows, and thefore offer support for any cards plugged into them.  In other words, the PCI Channel, IDE Channels, etc may not be fully functional until you install the chipset drivers.

No problem.  The comment about the motherboard chipset drivers is also very relevant.

The IBM (now Lenovo) site isn't easy to find stuff in, but I discovered this guy's site which has the product manuals on it:

I have just run Adia32 against the machine and it is reporting my graphics adapter as a SiS 86C306

Members - my monitor problem has now been resolved better than I had expected.  However my modem driver problem is still preventing me from logging onto the internet.  I can't seem to find a driver that is compatible with my internal modem.  ADIA32 does not seem to show any details on modems.  The internal modem is plugged into a PCI slot, but I can't find any identifying labels or markings on the card itself.  Oh by the way the telephone line goes into the line socket in the back of the machine.

Try this page

http://siv.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/

Download siv, open it and run the executable file.  The application is a little complicated to use.  You are looking to see if it can identify the modem or extract the pci device info for the modem.

>>> "my monitor problem has now been resolved better than I had expected" <<<
What do you mean by this?

Have you managed to install a suitable graphics driver that now allows you to change the display settings properly, or was it dbrunton's steps to updating the driver that installed them correctly?

What does AIDA32 tell you about the motherboard?
It should give you a Name, ID, Chipset, and other details such as Revision Number.
Once you have supplied these, we can help you to locate the Chipset Drivers.

After the chipset drivers have been installed, you may find that your PCI cards become supported, recognised, and capable of using drivers installed for them.

OK gentlemen I have up'ed the anti as far as points go.
>>> "my monitor problem has now been resolved better than I had expected" <<<
What I mean is I ran the SiS530 from BillDL suggestion and my monitor now can handle up to and including 32 bit color and I can change the resolution to 1024 x 768 - It is absolutely magnificent !!

ADIA32 can not identify the motherboard or any of the details that you have asked about.  I used SIV as suggested by dbrunton suggested and it couldn't identify the motherboard either, however it did manage to identify the the modem as a cis 5614 international series V90 modem, but do you think I could find a driver for it in "Google".

Now I know for a fact that when the machine had WindowsME on it it did have a modem that worked.  Is there some way I can extract the modem driver from the WindowsME CD ??

The versiontracker site only directs you to the windows site for an update download.  Seeing I don't have the internet on the machine I don't think I can manage that one :)

I have had a look at the other two sites and there are one "hell" of a lot of drivers to choose from, but with the imited information I have which one do I pick ??

by: dbruntonPosted on 2006-12-25 at 05:04:07ID: 18195914

No idea.

Can you take that modem card out and go over it with a magnifying glass.  Look for any sort of numbers.  The FCC numbers should be there, I think they are compulsory on electronic equipment.  The two links given do have some FCC numbers for some of the drivers.

No joy, look at the modem chip itself and see if you can see the numbers on that and the manufacturer.  That can help find a generic driver.

Look at

http://www.modemsite.com/56k/chipset.asp

Use PCI Tree from

http://www.modemsite.com/56k/pcitree.asp

to get the chipset and the PCI ID number

by: farnientePosted on 2006-12-26 at 00:59:18ID: 18197522

I am going to act dumb here.  I have searched through both CIS and Wisecom, but I can not find a driver for a 5614 International series V.90 modem.  There are indeed a lot of models there, but I once again ask how can I access the modem drivers on the WindowsME CD.  I know they are packed in one of the Windows Folders, but which one ??

by: farnientePosted on 2006-12-26 at 01:00:04ID: 18197523

I don't seem to be able to get the modem card out of the riser !!

by: dbruntonPosted on 2006-12-26 at 09:41:33ID: 18198838

On a Windows installation the drivers - I should say the install files - are in the windows\inf folder.

However on an install disk they are probably packed inside one of the cab files.

by: farnientePosted on 2006-12-31 at 04:01:41ID: 18221023

Thank you all for your genereous and understanding help.  The computer now has a graphics adapter working correctly and modem that connects to the internet and two extra items a sound card and a games adapter have all become available.  Thank you all once again and I hope you have a Happy and prosperous New Year.
