Windows is not recognizing my CD-ROMs

Ok, I'm likely to provide not much info at first and sorry about that... but...
I've an older (7 years?) computer and my CD-ROM drives have suddenly stopped showing up in Windows (WIN98)...
The other day, I went in to play a game using them and they didn't show... I went into System in the Control Panel and using it and a reboot managed to get them to show back up (and they were both functioning)...
Today, they were gone again... I tried the same thing as the other day but it didn't work. I ended up using the Remove button in System and now can't figure out how to get them back at all...
I opened the case and gave it a THOROUGH cleaning... and put it back together and still no CDs...
I booted in DOS and they were accessible and functionable...
So... help...?
Oh, and I'm not sure the comp originally came with a CD so if that's a potential idea, try again... =]
