Can't install Windows 98 on modern system

I'm trying to install Windows 98 on a newer Dell (XPS 400) that came with Windows XP (customer request), but it always freezes when it gets to the point where it's installing hardware.  I've tried using different CDs and have also tried the install with all non-necessary hardware removed.  Does anyone know a way around this, or maybe if there is just an incompatibility between the newer hardware and W98?  Customer previously had it dual-booting with Ubuntu.
