Put it on it's side with the system access panel at the top (i.e. the CD eject button nearest the floor)
Unscrew the thumbscrew at the back of the server that holds the side panel until it is loose.
(Now the "very Dell bit")

Along the ends of the panel at the back you'll find two indentations.  If you press both in at the same time the panel will now slide towards the back of the server.  It moves about an inch then you can lift it from the edge that is sticking out and rotate it free.

You need both hands and a bit of space!
