Is there a serial number/version number stuck on the case anywhere?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI'm having a hard time with getting the right drivers for this notebook.
The basic 98SE was installed from CD, but most of the drivers are not included.
The big 'combo' driver downloads from HP (there are two) extracted, but none of them seem to be what Device Manager is looking for.
If I could get at least the NIC and USB drivers installed, I can probably work through this - once I get Internet access.
Any specific thoughts on getting the exact drivers I need?
Does anyone know the default NIC for these computers?
I've re-loaded 98 on a ton of old computers for donation to charities, but this one has me spinning in circles.
Thanks.

edbedb,
Thank you for posting.
I have tried that one (afaxy01) as well as AFBXY01 and neither one has worked.
That isn't to say that this isn't a 'User Error' though. :)
Windows has identified the NIC as the 3 Com 3C562B-3C563B MNP10 Etherlink III LAN + 288 Modem PC Card - but when I used that specific driver, I got the 98 version of a BSOD.
When I finally got the system to re-boot, the NIC was gone from Device Manager.
I have re-loaded the OS a few time now and want to be careful to use the exactly correct driver this time.
try this to identify the devices :
Start-Programs-Accessories
Click on "components" and highlight "problem devices".
All hardware devices with a driver problem will be listed here.
Make a note of the first line of the PNP Device ID line of the entry. It will show a Vendor number and a Device number (VENxxxxDEVxxxx) both four digits long.
Look up those numbers here: http://www.pcidatabase.com
This will tell you the manufacturer and the chip number. Check the manufacturer's website first or google them
nobus - thank you.
I actually searched for that post of yours - I know I've seen it before.
Unfortunately, I started out by installing a new video driver (the screen has been a tiny 4"x5" rectangle and I've lost all video - even on POST/Boot.
I'm still beating on this thing and appreciate the comments.
Vic
you can try a system restore - if you have one : http://support.microsoft.c
or try in safe mode !
Dang me for a fool!
Apologies (I'm only on my second cup of coffee).
I plugged in an external monitor (KVM switch) and then fooled around doing some other stuff and forgot I did that.
The Video is fine and I am working the rest of it.
Thank you for the link.
BTW - the driver for the Rage P/M Mobility AGP 2x was found at the Dell web site. I'll post the link later.
i doubt you can do that with a driver install, post should be visible till the driver(s) load
remove video card, or test with another one !
(stripping the system to bare minimum is also a good start)
if you want me around for further advice, post back asap - otherwise, i'll shutdown in 10 minutes ! (till this evening)

I believe this download has all the drivers you will need.
