Question

Help with virus that keeps coming back!

Asked by: CareyG

This is the craziest virus I have ever seen. I have no idea how my son got it but it is very insistant! I ran a scan with malware bytes, pc docter and spybot, they all found alot of stuff and deleted the files. I then ran a very thorough and long scan with McAfee and it also detected and removed. But after a few clicks another virus pops up. Here are just a few of the names, Police Pro, Security scan, security center, etc. It does not let you open anything! Gives you messages that your file is corrupted and cant be opened. I try to boot in safe mode and I get the blue screen of death. My updates are also disabled and I cant turn back on. I have even tried to remove the virus manually but when I go to regedit the keys are not there! I have been trying for days and always the same thing happens, i think its clean and BOOM virus pops up again after a few minutes, have just about given up. Can anyone help please?

This forum thread sounds like the exact thing you are having problems with:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/virus-trojan-spyware-help/412821-windows-police-pro-bad-virus-need-help.html

If you want, attach all the processes that are running.  After that, download ComboFix.  Try to run that after you link the processes that are running.  I will take a look at these while you run ComboFix and hopefully we can figure out whats going on.

I had a similar issue that was resolved here.
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Internet_Email/Anti_Spyware/Q_24636095.html
Combofix is a good suggestion. I would also add that  prior to running Combofix or any other anti-malware/anti-virus application please stop your anti-virus and anti-malware programs. Combofix should be saved to and run from your desktop.
You should rename Combofix and any other anti-malware suites to a different name prior to downloading as some threats can prevent them from running with their default names. Ex: Combofix.exe rename to CFix.123.exe
Note: ComboFix should not be run in Safe Mode, unless that is the only mode the affected system will boot to.

I would suggest Combofix as well.

Run a temporary file remover...CCleaner is a good one and it's free.
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Download Combofix by sUBs. (as already suggested by SuperRhino and David-Howard)
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Before running Combofix, temporary disable any firewall(s) shield(s) ect...to prevent any conflicts with Combofix. After Combofix is done scanning, it will create a log, for futher instructions, save and paste the results by Attach File, or by Code Snippet so other experts can take a look at it. Once after the log looks clean, you may enable your firewall(s) shield(s) ect. Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet. Your Internet connection will be automatically restored just before Combofix completes its scan. If Combofix runs into problems, your Internet connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

You'll might need to rename the file before saving to your desktop so it will not be blocked.
(again already suggested by David-Howard)

Please note: Don't run Combofix in Safe Mode. (again already suggested by David-Howard))

In some cases, really bad infections are hard to remove and the last resort would be to format and re-install.

Something else you can try doing, take the hard drive out of the computer and put it into another computer as slave, if the drive is ide, and/or if the drive is sata, just add it as a secondary drive and scan the drive again that way.

Combofix doesn't give the option to scan multiple or other drives like other anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-malware applications.

Your best bet would be to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again on the drive again.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Or if you have a external hard drive enclosure you can put the drive in the enclosure and scan the drive that way.

Thanks guys, I did the combofix. Here  is the logfile. I have mcafee  virus but I think my son is going to need a better virus program as these viruses got through McAfee. Can you suggest a better one?

I have Kaspersky on my computer, will install it into his as well. Did the combofix remove the viruses?

by: SuperRhinoPosted on 2009-10-09 at 16:22:02ID: 25539634

I use AVG free edition and have had a great experience with it, it's not a resource hog either.

As far as the viruses go, it looks like it deleted a solid amount of stuff.  I would recommend going through your normal antivirus scan through kaspersky or avg to be sure.

Looking at the log It removed a lot of infections.

:) It happens, I remember one time my nephew had 300+ virus/spyware instances on his computer.  It took me a solid 2 days to get it completly cleaned up.  A good antivirus software and just trying to stay on the main websites will help.  Good luck to you!!

Thanks so much! I am downloading AVG as we speak!

Since April 2009 there has been a significant increase in the sophistication of the fake/rogue antivirus scanners and the rootkits driving them.  They are network and device aware and can spread simply by plugging in a USB stick so when working on these nasties you want to isolate the computer from any network and only put things on it from a CD/DVD.

As a class these rootkits are protected by a hidden device driver usually under Non-Plug and Play Drivers that will block access to Regedit and most of the common manual removal tools.  They are further protected by additonal components that are capable of disabling MBAM, Norton, McAFee, Trend, CA, AVG and and others.  Since your DNS is hijacked you are blocked from real access to Norton, Microsoft, McAFee, Malwarebytes and most of the sites that will get you tools or info to get rid of it.  You typically are blocked from running MBAM and ComboFix - you click and they never launch unless you rename them and/or the folder they live in.

The short version of removal is to use a rootkit detector to identify the randomly named hidden device driver at the top of the pyramid.  Disable the driver, reboot and run a renamed Malwarebytes to kill it.  There is no assurance with these types of rootkits that you have ever completely removed them.   Search Google, EE and BleepingComputer.com on TDSS which is the usual rootkit behind it all.  I have had one instance of TDSS variant D that went dormant and came back a couple days later after the system passed multiple full scans of ComboFix, Malwarebytes, GMER, Sophos, Sophos Rootkit Detector, PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Antivirus (SDAV), SAV10 and Kaspersky.

As suggested above you really should consider a full wipe and clean Windows install.  That said you probably want to know how to rescue your personal files if you are not an avid backup fanatic.

If you aren't comfortable doing all this, a good computer shop usually has all the stuff to do it but it is slow and can get pricey.  Generally, they will have a PC setup that they can just pull your drive, scan it and move the personal files to a safe spot skipping the more tedious stuff.

You need a clean computer with a commercial antispyware/antivirus product on it that is capable of proactively blocking virus/malware like behavior ( I prefer PC Tools SDAV6 but the proactive part is ThreatFire which is licensed and used by several of the big players I think).  You also need a bootable disk image product like Acronis, Ghost  OR a Bootable CD with BartPE and a suitably large USB portable drive.

  1. Boot the infected system from the disk imaging resue media and image the entire drive to the portable USB drive.  Or, you can boot in BartPE and copy just the your documents.  Shut down.
  2. Working from the Portable USB drive, move it to the clean computer and run a full scan immediately.  Quarantine and delete anything that comes up.  Reboot and rescan until nothing is detected.
  3. If you copied the files from BartPE the rescued files are now clean.  If you imaged them move on to #4.
  4. You need to use the rescue media to extract just your documents files.  Do that on the USB device and then run  full scans of the drive until it comes up clean.
  5. When you know you have all your files, they are clean and you have actually tested them to see they can be opened, go back and wipe the old system, reinstall Windows and Apps doing a low level format (slow) during the install.
  6. Then move your files back.
  7. Scan, scan and rescan to make sure your are staying clean.

Hope this is helpful.
