C:\windows\temp - what can I delete?

I have a lot of files in the temp folder with the following types of names:
~DF10AB.TMP
ZLT136.TMP
TWAIN.LOG
Twunk001.MTX
~ep8190.cmd
102B62.dmp

and a bunch of DLLs
aboutplg.dll
ADVPACK.DLL
emailres.dll
n32opts.dll
W95INF16.DLL
W95INF32.DLL

what can I safely delete?
also under temp I have the following folders:
Cookies
Histórico
ICD7.tmp
IXP000.TMP
msoclip1
Temporary Internet Files
VBE

what is their use?

Well you can delete the files in the temp folder. They are temporary files generaly created by programs that have no use once the application closes. Most programs will clean up after themselves but some don't.

If a file is in use at the time the system will not allow you to delete those files. Most installation of programs will use the temp folder while they are installing that's why you may see files with extensions other then tmp. Not sure why the TWAIN.log file is there but generally speaking you can delete all the files in the temp folder.

As far as these folders

Cookies

Temporary Internet Files

you should be alright in deleting the following ones

Histórico
ICD7.tmp
IXP000.TMP
msoclip1
VBE

The Cookies and the Temporary Internet Files files have to with Internet Explorer but usually they are not under the the C:\windows\temp folder. See if you can find these folders else where. If so then try and remove these folders from the C:\windows\temp folder.

When I say delete I mean remove them to the Recycle Bin just in case the system complains you can restore them back. If after a few days the System doesn't complain then remove them from the Recycle Bin.

Here is a neat little trick I have used.

Open notepad copy and paste the following line into notepad

deltree /y C:\Windows\temp


Now save the file with the bat extension
Example

DelTemp.bat

Now place it in your startup folder and it will run everytime you restart Windows and remove all those files in the C:\Windows\temp folder.
