Greetings, amiee!
This error indicates that there is an invalid path between the Microsoft® Windows® registry and one or more folders stored in My Pictures.

Open Microsoft Windows Explorer, right-click My Pictures, and then click Properties.
Click the Target tab, and then do one of the following:
Click Restore Default, and then click OK.

Note: By default, the My Pictures folder is stored at C:\Documents and Settings\user name\My Pictures, where C is the drive that Windows is installed on, and user name is the user who is currently logged on.

Type the path to the folder that you want in the Target field, and then click OK. For example, type C:\My Docs. If the folder does not exist, the Create Message window will appear. Click Yes in that window to create the folder, and then click OK.
Click Move, select the folder you want to store documents in, and then click OK. If you want to create a new folder, click New Folder, enter a name for the folder, and then click OK.
Try to install Norton again.

Best wishes, war1

All pretty good info above, except that war1 has forgotten that he is in the WinME topic area rather than the WinXP area.  He says:

> By default, the My Pictures folder is stored at C:\Documents and Settings\user name\My Pictures, where C is the drive that Windows is installed on, and user name is the user who is currently logged on.

Instead, in WinME, it is stored at:

C:\My Documents\My Pictures.

now i have another problem...yes i'm kinda computer deficient...but i don't get what

Open Microsoft Windows Explorer, right-click My Pictures, and then click Properties.
Click the Target tab, and then do one of the following:
Click Restore Default, and then click OK.

means....cuz i've right clicked my pictures...and i've clicked properties...but i don't get a Target tab...the only tab i get it the general tab.  so what has gone wrong now?

I am really not quite sure what war1 was talking about.  There is a Target field in a shortcut, so if you were to create a shortcut to the My Pictures folder, you could type in a new address for another folder there, and then move your pictures from their present location to the new location, which hopefully would correct the wrong Registry data.

You may want to wait for war1 to come back and give you more information, before trying what I suggest.

Incidentally, you really shouldn't have closed the question by accepting an answer until your problem was entirely resolved, but don't worry, I believe both of us will stay with you until it is solved.

I believe I found the web page where war1 got his post from.  It is here:

http://www.intuit.com/support/quicken/2003/win/574119.html

But, as you can see by reading it, it is for Win2000 or WinXP, and in that OS I believe there is a shortcut for My Documents on the Start Menu (I'm not logged in to XP right  now, and I cannot remember for sure.)

I've found another article from the Microsoft Knowledge Base on "error 1234" while installing various Microsoft programs:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q242/9/13.asp&NoWebContent=1

And still another one:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=237915

From these, you can see there might be other problems causing the error message.  So check to see if:

1) you are using User Profiles and one of the profiles has a slash in its name
or
2) The Microsoft Windows Installer file is damaged or is not installed properly.
Your CD-ROM drive uses a real mode (16-bit) driver.
The microprocessor (CPU) installed in your computer does not meet the minimum system requirements needed to run the program.
You attempt to install the program on a computer with insufficient hard disk space
