The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Window Updates of ME

Asked by tonyadam in Windows ME Operating System

I will try to net this out very quickly.  I have over 9 hours invested in rebuilding a WIN ME system on a Gateway Laptop.  I gave up attemtping to do so via the Gateway Restoration CDs and found a way to do it from the CAB files.  However, upon going to the MS website to download the critical updates, EXPLORER blows up with a hard stop.  I was finally able to find someone at Gateway that told me there is a problem with using their Restoration CDs when the system has more than 8GB of hard disk.  Interesting.  Regardless, the procedure is to write "0s" to the hard disk, format and then use the Restoration CDs.  That worked.  I was able to get WIN ME installed and it worked perfectly.  However, just as soon as I went to MS WIN UPDATES and started the first download of IE 6 PS1, the update appeared to perform properly but upon the first restart the following errors are reported.....1.  "An error occurred loading "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCVW.DLL".  The file may not have been installed or it has been corrupted."  2.  An error or exceptioni occurred while calling the function "DLLInstall" in "C:\WINDOWS\SYTEM|inetcpl.cpl".  3.  Explorer has caused an error in BROWSEUI.DLL.  Explorer will now close".   Finally error 4.  Explorere has caused an error in WEBCHECK.DLL.  Explorer will not close.     Any attempt to close will cause a blue screen and WINDOWS will no longer boot.

I've already researched MS's site with the errors and attempted their resolutions.  Nothing works.  Do any of you have any idea about how to go about getting these updates from MS without this problem?  Also, is there any way of getting WINDOWS back up again without having to reload the entire system from the RESTORATION CDs?   Thanks for your help.
