Question

Visual C++ Runtime library C:\Windows\Explorer.exe Abnormal Program Termination

Asked by: rico

I have a Windows Me pc (HP Pavilion XV888).

Anytime I right click on my desktop or double-clikc the Display icon in control panel I get the following 2 errors.

(right click) - Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Program: C:\Windows\Explorer.exe Abnormal Program Termination

(double click Display icon) - Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Program: C:\Windows\rundll32.exe Abnormal Program Termination

I've already update my Visual Basic scripts (msvcrt.dll). I've scanned for virus & found & removed W32.Valla worm from system.

I scanned for & removed spyware. I've re-installed ME over the original copy. I've removed my video card drivers & installed the standard VGA driver.

Any help in resolving this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks

rico,
        >   found & removed W32.Valla worm  <
Wonder if you still have a virus?   You may like to recheck with Housecall's free scanner:
          http://housecall.trendmicro.com

or this one, another FREE, recommended virus scanner:
          http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Found an extract from a URL as follows.  May be worth you following it up:
Quote:
Are you fully up to date with Microsoft updates and do you have the lastest version of IE6?
If so, do you have any explorer toolbars installed, such as CommonName or the eBay toolbar.
The former can certainly cause the error you describe (Explorer.exe Abnormal Program Termination)

I'm attempting to reinstall IE6 just in case, it seems the error accompanies Internet Explorer as well.

I already scanned my system with Norton AV (boot cd) with the definitions as of 5/12/04. It didn't even catch the W32.Valla worm, I checked it with a removal tool disk I have for it. I'm losing my faith in Norton.

I'll try Trend Micro just in the off chance I do have a virus still.

Bootup in Safe Mode, go to Device Manager and delete ALL entries under display adapter.

Reboot and let Windows reinstall the drivers.

You may have an AGP card installed and onboard video ENABLED.

Go to Bios (pressing DEL during startup) and DISABLE onboard video.

Just a suggestion, if Zee's comment does'nt do the trick.  You may like to ensure you download and have a good copy of IE stored (for example) in 'My Favorites', before you delete your working version.

To delete, select Control Panel > Add/Remove programs, to uninstall IE6.
or use IE Eradicator to delete Internet Explorer6.

I already deleted the display adapters in Safe Mode (had about 10). No onboard video on this model.

I've used IE Eradicator already & am in the process of reinstalling IE6 from Norton 2004 cd.

Ok, I've reinstalled IE6 with the same results. When I right click on the desktop area I get the abnormal program termination.

I'm not, I'm just using the CD to reinstall Internet Explorer 6.0.

May i suggest you try HijackThis.   It could help you to both identify and remove any obstinate hijackware/spyware. The first link contains useful text and Download facility:
                        http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/
                        http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip
It may be easier to download HijackThis from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html

You can download and run HijackThis, and concise instructions explain how to use it.         Click the "scan" button.
The "Scan" button converts into the "Save log" button.
Click it to create a file named HijackThis.log , and save it in a folder such as 'My Favorites'.
Open the LOG in Notepad or Wordpad, inspect, and you may see a reference to your issue.

Now CARE is needed!   You may well be very experienced in it's use but many users use this only to scan, not to 'fix'.
The choice of course is yours.  You could select 'Edit' on toolbar.
From dropdown menu, click 'Select all' which highlights your text.
Paste the text to EE comment box, where someone here could scrutinise it.

Have included unnecessary detail maybe, but log-off is imminent!

I would suspect that another application is running or corrupted driver that is causing explorer.exe to crash.  Many applications have hooks into explorer.exe that could potentially cause this error from corrupted drivers, corrupted executables, incompatibilities, and virulant modifications to applications.
Many viruses attach themselves to executables and overwrite windows dlls.

What I would suggest would be to run MSCONFIG ( Start --> Run --> MSCONFIG <ENTER> ) and uncheck everything under the Startup tab.  Reboot the PC and see if you can replicate the error.  If this fixes it, go back into MSCONFIG and check items in the Startup tab and reboot until you have found the culprit.  Also, post your Hijack this log, as Jonvee says to see if there are suspicious files loading/services running.

Here is the log file created by Hijack This.

Thanks  .. spent a few minutes studying the log extract and can't see anything problematic either!    Will definitely spend longer on it tonight, and inform you either way.   Meanwhile, maybe zombieooo will spot something.

Still haven't found anything significant yet in HyjackThis log, but intend to continue.   Meanwhile you could take a look here. Just maybe it could offer you some guidance:

Here's another.  Have left the highlighting on for your guidance. Scroll down to the bottom of the appropriate page
as there are a number of brief entries:

You may also like to download and try Process Explorer v 8.20, see link below, to see if you can
spot anything unusual (MSCONFIG):

I'll check the links as soon as I get back from a call.

I did manage to fix the problem by a clean install of Windows ME, so I'm beginning to suspect that it's a rogue DLL file or registry entry. Because even though I moved the Program Files folder & had the new install create a new one, I still get the error on the old install of Windows ME. I'll check my theory & your links once I return.

I appreciate all the help. Things like this make me regret going back to Windows, instead of Linux & OS/2.

by: ricoPosted on 2004-05-19 at 13:20:32ID: 11111697

Ok I've narrowed down the issue to my registry. Even with the clean install of Me, if I reimport the registry from the old copy it brings back the error. Not sure if it would be worth while to print out an 11meg registry file & a 3meg registry file & compare them both to see where a problem might be. Most likely it's an installed program causing all my problems. But to narrow down to which one.

Maybe you should try

A registry repair:

Bootup with a startup floppy disk and at the A:\> prompt type

scanreg /fix (space between g and /)

Press enter, wait for the process to finish and reboot WITHOUT the disk.

If that doesn't work, try a registry restore:

Bootup with a startup floppy disk and at the A:\> prompt type

scanreg /restore (space between g and /)

Press enter, select a date PRIOR to the problem, press enter, wait for the process to finish and reboot WITHOUT the disk.

If you don’t have a startup disk, download one from www.bootdisk.com.

Any luck?
