The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

Many Problems... firstly no cursor

Urgent help required.

Went to use my home PC last night and found a series of problems, consequently I'm having to use a different PC to ask for help and would like to have a solution to try when I get home, in 8 hours (the clock is ticking).

First problem: on booting up, my computer seems to have reset itself so it does not remember my logon password (not a problem as it just creates a new one and logs on regardless) BUT it has also forgotten my desktop settings so my monitor is back to 16 colours etc AND the main problem is that the cursor is no longer there so I am unable to navigate (this happened once with another machine and I remember that it was some addition to some code somewhere - sorry to be vague but I'm a creative not a techy - and once the add-on code had been removed the mouse cursor came back - anyone know what I'm talking about?)
Second problem:  Machine refuses to restore to old restore point
Third problem: Tried to go online to find help - machine can't find modem
Forth problem: Can't seem to get the machine to start in safe mode any more - I managed it once and the cursor was present (does this mean that there is some program booting up at start-up which is causing the problems?)
Next problem: I have lot's of work on the hard drive and no back-ups (yeah I know, pretty dumb, but hindsight is a wonderful thing) and do not really want to have to reformat (but if I do how do I partition the drive to save any future headaches?)

So to sum up, the way I see it I need know how to get to safe mode : then where to look for new programmes that could be causing problems (tried search and it crashed) or how to turn off all but essential start-up programs : how to get the cursor back and the modem
