Question

How to define JAVA_HOME variable under Windows ME for TomCat 5 ?

Asked by: _Esam

Please answer if the question is in the right TA.
I'm not sure which topic area it belongs to (perhaps both Windows ME and JSP ?)

I installed jdk1.5.0_02 on my Windows ME.
Now I tried to install TomCat 5.5, and it gave some error message.
I installed anyway ignoring the warning...but I can't see the TomCat default page...??

I believe the JAVA_HOME is not being set properly..

Let me know what I need to do to define the JAVA_HOME properly..

Thanks.

Hi,
I need to be clear... regarding the base JDK directory.
If the full path to the bin directory is:

C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_02\bin

Then I set it to:     C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_02    ?

I tried to do it in the command line as:

set JAVA_HOME = "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_02" (I used quote since Program Files is a longer directory name - ME complaints for this ..)

When I typed set , it did show JAVA_HOME = "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_02"

Did I do it right?
How can I really verify it's being set?

Thanks.
I did looked into those first link...doesn't help me much..

Thanks..

Have you tried to edit AUTOEXEC.BAT file to set the environment variable?
Try to use WInME msconfig to access autoexec.bat file and edit variable.

While it is possible to set environment variables in the same way as for Windows 95 by editing the file AUTOEXEC.BAT, it is easier to use the Microsoft facility MSCONFIG (which does this for you).

Hi,
I believe I tried this utility but other way... start > program>accessories>.....

Anyway,
Here is what I have there:

 C:\PROGRA~1\Java\jdk1.5.0_02        for my JAVA_HOME

 C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\Progra~1\Java\jdk1.5.0_02\bin; C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\MSInfo\;C:\ATF        for my PATH

SO, they are set parmanently..and I should not have any problem installing the TomCat..

But when I tried to install it still complaints...

by: nedvisPosted on 2005-03-30 at 21:36:01ID: 13668899

Does it read :

SET JAVA_HOME = C:\PROGRA~1\Java\jdk1.5.0_02
or
SET JAVA_HOME  = "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_02"

Windows ME will (sometimes) ignores autoexec.bat inputs alltogether no matter what you type there .
It might be good idea to re-install JDK in custom ( user defined) folder e.g.  c:\jdk1  just to sattisfy  8.3  MS-DOS file name format and avoid hassles with support for long file names.

Anyway to check environment setting click Start ---> RUn and type command.
at command prompt type
 SET
and make sure environment variable for JAVA-HOME is mentioned in the SET environment report return.

If it's not , you have to tweak autoexec.bat SET statement .

good luck

by: _EsamPosted on 2005-03-30 at 21:41:51ID: 13668914

Well,
It is mentioned.
And it reads as:

JAVA_HOME = C:\PROGRA~1\Java\jdk1.5.0_02

So, it should be ok..

I just don't get it...what the he** is wrong with tomcat?

Java VS ASP VS CF (1:21pm EST Thu Jul 19 2001)
This is just another reason why Java sucks and I HOPE MS kills them. Ever try to configure tomcat on Windows? The server SUCKS!!! There is no executable on the apache site, so you have unzip several files into an installation directory, install the JRE which you have to download from Sun's site, register 3 environment variables by hand, and then run a startup script. If the process doesn't work, the program DOESN'T log any errors, so you are left guessing. If you want to run it as a servce (and not see that stupid MSDOS window) or ISAPI filter (so it can share a port with another application), you have to edit registry settings and do a whole lot of stupid manual steps that should be automated. Wanna install JRun? You get a friendlier installation interface, but it almost NEVER works on Windows 2000. Their ISAPI wizard never works. <quote>

Any Windows Version from Windows 98/Me nnward. Use the autoexec.bat file.

      set CLASSPATH=.;C:\Servlets+JSP; install_dir\common\lib\servlet-api.jar;install_dir\common\lib\jsp-api.jar

Sample file to download and modify: autoexec.bat

set PATH = C:\j2sdk1.4.2_06\bin;%PATH%
set JAVA_HOME = C:\j2sdk1.4.2_06
set CLASSPATH=.;C:\jakarta-tomcat-5.5.4\common\lib\servlet-api.jar;C:\jakarta-tomcat-5.5.4\common\lib\jsp-api.jar;C:\Servlets+J

Note : the last ( 3rd ) line is broken(wraped) in two lines in order to fit the experts=exchange edit window.

substitute  "j2sdk1.4.2_06" with the version numbers you're having on your system ( jdk1.5.0_02 - I guess)

good luck

I think I have to go to  bad ; have to go to work early in the mornng

Hi Nedvis,

I truely appreciate your detailed elaboration on the problem..
Unfortunately, there is something wrong with my Windows ME computer...I just can't seem to install it properly and the path variable seems to be kept changing everytime I reboot the computer ... tried different ways ......

So, I just tried to install the tomcat on a Windows XP machine, and I was able to install it in a few minutes...WOW...(since I already went trough lotta stuffs :)

I guess it's time to upgrame my silly WinME :)

Thanks a lot .. nedvis..
