Email works but browsers don't

I had to repair my Windows ME recently. Since then I can't logon to my router (T-Sinus 130) or the internet. Every browser (IE 5.5, Firefox 1.5 or Opera) reponds with "server or dns not found". I've checked all the settings in IE and they are OK, the Network Connection settings are all default (i.e. no dns, dhcp, wins, proxserver etc.)
The LAN connection (D-Link DFE 528TX) is fine and I can ping the router (198.128.2.1). I can send and receive mails with Outlook express too. I've turned off all firewalls and stopped all unecessary tasks.
I've got another laptop in the LAN and that can connect to the router/internet.

I think something similar happened before and by trial and error I deleted some old program or dll and it worked again. Unfortunately I can't remember which one.

What is fundamentaly different between the e-mail connection and the browser connection to the router/internet ? Which setting,dll or other file could have been eventually changed by the Windows ME repair that has affected the internet connection?

Any ideas?

This question might be more suited to the Network section but I wasn't sure which subsection. If necessary can someone move it to the most appropriate section? Thanks.
