The Solution Rating System

WME VMM.VXD error Cannt open windows

Error msg:  
The following file is missing or corrupted:  C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VVM32.VXD
Type the name of the windows loader (eg. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD}

Begins to load in ME and then the error.

I think the cause of this is the user [who is a friend, handicapped, out of work] usually shuts down this computer by just flipping the power switch.  When Scandisk comes up he bypasses it!  He is a collector and has a wonderful collection [toys] and has his inventory on this computer with NO backups.

      [Another friend of his tried to load WXP but it was too large [was very unstable] so he put WME on]
On insdie top:  label   Replace with IDE .8.065,  TZ 1998 8 10 [stamped on inside, side]

I made a boot disk and tried to load an earlier [earliest] registry; it said there were no errors but it still will not reboot.

Command Scandisk = “bad command” as w/  Scanreg/fix and scanreg/restore

Tried:  off-disconnect all but mouse, keyboard and monitor-press the power button on the front-plug the power cord back in and turn on . . . error still there

Rebooted with boot disk
 MS W ME  Startup menu:
 1. Help
 2. Start compute with CD-ROM Support
 3. Start computer without CD-ROM Support
 4. Minimal boot

tried 4 first “Following file missing or corrupted:  MODE.COM
[There is an error with your CONFIG.SYS  on line 46 [ & 47]
  about the same for 1,2,3 of the above menu

Ran VER:  RAMDRIVE VERSION 3.06, Virtual disk D
Disk size  2,048K
Sector size 512 bytes
Allocation units  2 sectors
Directory entries  64
And then the same error “following file missing or corrupted etc.

I can get a directory list but most of them are denied when I key in “TYPE”

I would like to get his inventory files, some 3,000 items without reinstalling ME [which I don’t have the CD]
He is out of work, has no money and needs to sell some of his collection.  I would appreciate any help you can give me.  I have explained that his “shut down process” has probably caused these problems and I think he understands and will do it correctly.
