Tags: Microsoft, Windows, ME, Internet explorer
I have just recently acquired a laptop that "upper management" wants to be able to use.  dont ask why i dont know. anyhow I have been trying to setup a LAN connection on the laptop and connect to the internet with no success.  Not being really familiar with the ME system I hope I have not broke anything in the process.  Can anyone tell me what the steps are to setup this type of connection on the ME system?
And yest the laptop does have an ethernet port on the back.  When i plug the cable from the laptop into a switch no ligths come up.

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

As you're not seeing the ethernet light, you could try checking out your ethernet card by following the steps shown in the first part of this article>
"Windows 98 Network Troubleshooting":
http://helpdesk.rpi.edu/update.do?artcenterkey=178

You may also find this of use>
"Troubleshooting Device Conflicts with Device Manager":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/133240/EN-US/

If you're really not progressing & you still suspect the network card (see Device Mgr), try this>
Select Safe mode by depressing the Ctrl key (or F8) during bootup.
Select Start > Settings > Ctrl Panel > System > Device Manager.
Now delete ALL of the entries that refer to Adaptor, and communication devices.
Shut down then reboot in Normal mode.
The USB adaptor should then look for the correct driver(s).  For this you may be asked for the installation CD.
Shut down again, reboot in Normal mode then check status.
