Question

Skype - "Problem with playback device"

Asked by: orangutang

I talked to someone today with an old Windows ME system who uses Skype. He said everything was working fine until this morning. Whenever he tries to make a call, it gives the error "Problem with playback device". I've already tried all playback devices but nothing works. I tried reinstalling the audio drivers which doesn't seem to be necessary because everything else sound related works. I've tried playing the sounds in the "Sounds" section of the options. I've tried changing all of the options in audio section such as changing the devices and changing the volume. I looked at:
http://support.skype.com/index.php?_a=knowledgebase&_j=questiondetails&_i=155
I also tried reinstalling the latest version of Skype. I checked all of the connections for the microphone and everything seems to be fine. I tested the microphone and that works. I also checked dxdiag and ran the tests and checked for any problems but everything was fine there too. What else can I do? Thank you

Headset or speakers?

It was a weird setup. He used a headset but the option for the microphone in the volume control was muted but I think that still worked anyway when it was working. Also, the option for PC speakers was also removed but the speakers were still working. I unmuted the microphone and added the PC speakers but it still didn't work.

The problem is exactly what you are doing -- reinstalling the LATEST version of Skype.  The last 5 versions of Skype will not work correctly with win 98 or winME -- they have gone FAR beyond this OS, because of its atrocious support for video functions.  SO you will either have to install a version from 1-2 years ago that might just work on WIN-ME, or tell him to upgrade and leave an OS that's no good for video conferencing.

OOOOOOhhhhhh, I didn't even check if he had a supported OS version. Well, where can I find an old version of Skype to download?

Well, I found
http://www.filehippo.com/download_skype/
which version should I download?

by: scrathcyboyPosted on 2008-08-17 at 18:56:48ID: 22249038

I have them all back to 4 years, if you can't find one on the net, and can find the version you want, I can send it to you, as it is free software.  Remember, you have to deactivate the auto-update feature.  Also, since I don't use video on skype, I cannot tell you which versions will work on 98-ME for video.  You will have to do some serious google searching to find that out, and if you can come up with a version, I might have it.

Actually, I'll just try downloading one a few versions back. I won't be able to test it until next week though. Thank you!

I would START with the last working version of 2 --
I think you will find that did NOT support video.
As I recall, it started in version 3, so download an early version of 3, and see if it works.  If so, don't go to newer versions, skype never said when they obsoleted win98-ME, they just DID !!   GOOD LUCK !!!

by: scrathcyboyPosted on 2008-08-17 at 19:05:30ID: 22249063

remember, skype is the easiest install uninstall on the planet, so there is no problem trying mutiple versions.
