Question

"an unwanted explorer window opens after login..."

Every time I login into my computer with my roaming account, I get an explorer window opened pointing to the \winnt\system32 directory.

I tried to get rid of it by closing all windows, then logging out so my profile is updated on the PDC, then restart, then login again, but alas, this window is there again. I have checked the Run and RunOnce etc, they contain nothing unusual.

Although the effect of this problem does is just annoying and I can live with it, I still want to find out why is this window appearing after each login.

Any ideas?

there is an illegal value in your registry.
Have you just installed McAfee VirusScan lately, I wonder??
Run regedit and check this key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run delete empty value (""), that should get rid of it.

I do have Virus Scan as part of the company policy for a configuration.

In the registry key you mention I have:

(Default) (value not set)
program1 value1
....     ....


Neither of (program, value) keys is an empty string "".

I checked the same key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER tree. The default there does have an "" for a value and I just deleted it. I am going to reboot and will tell you the result.
