dns and computer names

Asked by UncleMatt in Windows NT Operating System

I'm trying to set up dns on my WINNT 4 server, it's been going magic until i try to use the dns address i have set up to create a shared drive.

when i do:

net use x: \\computer.domain.com\directory

it works fine, but if i change the ip of that address i can't get the computer to, when i run the above command, to connect to the new one and not the old one.

We're doing this for backup reasons, just incase we lose a machine, we can swap all the mapped drives from that computer to another one without changing login scripts, individual computers etc.

i've tried flushing the dns using:

ipconfig /flushdns

and it flushes the dns ok, and when i ping the address it comes back as it should, but it still won't map to the new computer.

I'm guessing that it uses something else for the ipaddress for windows and shared drives.

in windows 2000 when i search for computers by the dns address it finds the old one even though the dns record on the computer has the new ip, but if i search by the ip address of the new one it finds the new one obviously.

sorry for the long windedness.
