I have a computer that is part of a domain which is trying to access a second computer
which is not part of a domain in order to share files (e.g. \\192.168.100.100\MyShare)
.
This setup works fine when we are within the local area network of the domain and
the first computer can contact our domain server (both computers are Win 2000).
When these two computers are brought to a different location, however, the sharing
fails and generates an error message of
"\\192.168.100.100 is not accessible.
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request."
Since the shared folder is on a computer that is not part of the domain, I don't understand
why we need to contact a logon server in order to deal with authentication. I also tried
to make authentication really easy by allowing everyone complete access.
If I log onto the first computer using a local account rather than the domain account,
there is no problem. If I disable the "Net Logon" service, then there is no problem.
These don't really solve the problem since I need the regular user to be able to use
his domain account without changing settings of services whenever he wants to
share files.
My question is:
How can I change the setup of either computer so that this problem goes away without
having to continually turn on and off services?
I would prefer a method that doesn't require manual reconfiguration, but anything
that works would be very much appreciated.
