The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Database backup successful but database files are skipped. Is it OK?

Asked by richtree in Windows NT Operating System

Tags: skipped, backup, mdf, files

backup server (serverA):
NT 4.0 server SP6
SQL server 7
backup software: BackupExec server 8.5 with agent for SQL server and NT/2000 server.

-------------------------
server being backed up (serverB):
NT 4.0 server SP5
SQL 7 SP

serverA back up all databases on serverB every night. The job status shows successful. But when I check the log, it skips all the *.ldf and *.mdf. For reference, I paste the log here.

Backup completed on 9/28/06 at 11:28:09 PM.
Backed up 1647 files in 11 directories.
2  files were in use
40 items were skipped.
Processed 131,606,653 bytes in  8 minutes and  19 seconds.
Throughput rate: 15.1 MB/min

Question#1: are the databases really protected (backed up)?
Question#2: How can I find out if serverB has the agent installed?
Question#3: I am sure we not using all the databases all the time. Only one or two are active. But why the log shows all those *.ldf and *mdf are in use? Which application/system might be using them?

I appreciate your help.
