RRAS static routes for Routing different subnets

Hi there

I have two networks connected via VPN (Cisco ASA 5505 - 5510) all setup and working.

Network A 172.16.0.0/22
Network B 172.16.100.0/22

On network A I have a server with the IP 172.16.36.240 that will need to connect to a server on Network B 172.16.40.240.

The reason I need to use these ranges it because I am using replication software (Neverfail) to replicate exchange servers (Site A - Site B) so these IP's are essentially a 2nd Network adaptor dedicated for that traffic.

Exchange A - Public Adaptor 172.16.0.240, Channel 172.16.36.240
Exchange B - Public Adaptor 172.16.100.240, Channel 172.16.40.240

The I have enabled the RRAS service on both servers as 172.16.36.240 needs a static route to connect to 172.16.40.240.

The gateway on Network A is 172.16.0.1 so I created a static route bonded to the 2nd (Channel) NIC with destination 172.16.40.240 with netmask 255.255.255.255 and gateway 172.16.0.1 and on the otherside (using Destination 172.16.36.240 and 172.16.100.1 as gateway on Exchange B).

However it doesn't seem to work, I am a little stumped as to how this can work though I am sure it can.

If anyone has come across anything similar any ideas would be appreciated.

With a netmask of 22 bits, that is 255.255.252.0, both adresses are not part of any network. You will have to loosen the mask to allow for all needed addresses on each side, so it is at least /21 on A and /17 on B:

Thanks for your help.

So are you saying I need to adjust the mask for just the channel adaptors?

At the moment 172.16.0.x can talk to 172.16.100.x

Its just 172.16.36.x routing through 172.16.0.1 over VPN to 172.16.100.1 to 172.16.40.x.

I dont have to use 172.16.36.x or 172.16.40.x, the perquisites are the channels must be on a different subnet to the publics.

You can use arbitrary networks, as long as the gateways know how to route them.
