Question

Security settings on roaming profile directory.

Asked by: sattech2000

Good evening all!

I am in the process of moving all of our roaming profile users to a new server.  The current server is a windows 2000 server, the new server is a windows 2008 based server.

I have this problem with the current server and also in testing of the new server.  When a user first loges in and creates the profile directory on the server. domain admins are unable to access the folder without taking ownership of that users directory.  The users profile works fine. I would like to have the users directory be created with the user and domain admins having full control  of the directory, but not anyone else.  What is the correct permissions I should set to accomplish this?  Im pulling my hair trying to figure it out.

I currently have the share set \\server\profiles
domain users = FC

Security is set on c:\profiles
CREATOR OWNER = special
SYSTEM = FC
Domain Admins = FC
Administrator = FC

Just ADD your admin rights without replacing existing ones. Look at cacls.exe command syntax.

cacsl \\server\profiles\*.* /T /E /C /G Domain Admins:F

Of course you have to try with one profile before editing all your users.

Im trying to avoid having to take ownership and then reset permissions every time I setup a user.  I dont understand why the users directory doesnt inherit the domain admin permissions when the user logs in and the directory is created.

Remove Domain Admins and the Administrator account, add the local group "Administrators" instead. Both Domain Admins and the Administrator account are members of the local Administrators group and have the necessary permissions through their group membership.
Remove the Domain Users, add the local Users group instead, and give it Read permissions in the main security tab; Domain Users are members of the local Users group. (Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGDLP for details.)
Click Apply, go to the Advanced security tab, change the permission for the "Users" group to "This folder only".
Add the Users group a second time, check only "Create Folders/Append Data", and set it to "This folder only" as well.
Finally, to allow administrators to access an automatically created roaming profile, you'll need to enable the policy "Add the Administrator security group to the roaming user profile share" for the machines on which the users are logging on.

Thank you for the tip on the security settings.  I am on a 2000 based directory, I havent been able to find a comparable group policy setting. Any suggestions?
What I dont understand is why when Im logged into the workstation as admin I can access the user profiles on the workstation just fine.  When I go to the server, logged in as admin, I cannot access the user profile directory that is located on the server without taking ownership.

Local profiles include the Administrators group by default; roaming profiles, when created automatically, don't.
In Windows 2000, the setting is in Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon, "Add the Administrators security group to roaming user profiles" (ignore the part about using the default domain policy).

I am able to access the profile directory on the workstation as admin by default.  Just not on the profile server.

Here I am banging my head on security and to have it turn out to be a policy setting, Doh!

That seems to have fixed the problem.
Thank you oBdA!!!!
