- Easy to use
- Monitors the server availability
- Monitors certain services
- Monitors Hardware failure issues at the server, such as: fan/ RAID/ Harddisks and so.
- Sends email notifications for such customized warnings/ errors
- and if possible, that can be AD integrated..what i meant is logging to the software monitoring tool using the AD credentials.so it will be in a way protected.

Nagios is a good free solution and is linux based. I dont remember if it can monitor services or not but can monitor your HDs and availability.

http://www.nagios.org/

If that isn't what your looking for you can also give Operations Manager from the System Center Suite from MS. This is an extremely useful tool that can even form a database of inventory and data.

http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/operationsmanager/en/us/default.aspx

Personally I used both and it works out very well for me. Both are notification capable.

I`m running zabbix.
I created a webservice so i can add stuff from our primary database.

www.zabbix.org

but also zenoss looks verry nice. I ran some tests with it. The only reason i dont use it, is because i couldnt create the webservice for it.

Also Groundworks Open Source (www.groundworksopensource.com) works very well. It's basically a nagios backend, with a great frontend. The community edition is free, and you can have the professional version, with support and more ready to use service profiles, at a fee!

I think your URL should be:

Without the S.

Nagios / Groundwork are great tools, and can monitor services via a rich set of community plugins.  But beware the integration with Windows systems leaves a lot to be desired in terms of time and effort to get working, and unless something has changed recently , there's no WMI interface so some of the low level (fan, etc) monitors arnt going to be there like with Active Experts

but if you are looking for more of a network wide tool like Nagios, and you have mostly Windows systems , you might want to take a quick test drive of Spiceworks ( http://www.spiceworks.com ) which adresses the same space as Nagios, does windows better, and unlike Operations Manager , is free

I'm not bashing any of thes systems, use them all, but each has it's niche

zabbix is free.

And they provide a tool ( zabbix-service ) that you can install on linux + windows servers to get more information about the servers..

Dont know if you would like to install a service on your servers...

SPiceworks is installed on a central server and requires no service to be installed on monitored systems.

If you are looking for an easy Nagios solution, please check out FAN Nagios.  It's a pre-built ISO that already has all of the installations and configurations done for you, and provides simple web interfaces to configure the software.

You'll just need to install NSClient++ on each of the windows machines and configure per their instructions.  Most/all of the services to monitor are already written for you, and the ability to create templates and apply that to multiple hosts saves a ton of time and allows changes to be made to multiple hosts/services in a single location.
