Problem connecting to ISP (NT4.0 Service pack 5)

I just had to reinstall the NT server 4.0 Service pack 5. I set it up to connect to my ISP. System recognizes the modem and dial up my ISP (Prodigy) properly, password is authenticated and connection is establish.

But when I use Netscape or IE to connect to the web. I get the message looking for the web site and then cannot find the web site (no matter which web site I go to).

It used to work before I reinstall the NT4.0.

Check the connection that your browser is using (IE4 view - internet options - connections to be sure that is correct. Also have you installed TCP/IP?

check the DNS tab under tcp/ip properties and ensure the ISPs DNS server is listed there.
Temporarily enter my ISPs DNS resover's address 195.92.197.6 and if it works then go to your ISPs website and find out what their DNS resolvers are for a permanent solution.

Solution:
======
I had to reinstall the Server Pack 5 and then every thing started working.

Actually my sequence of install was NT4.0 --> Server Pack 5.0 ---> ISP setup (RAS).

I guess RAS overwrote some of the files install by SP5.0 so reinstalling it fixed it.

 I did not have to do any setup for TCP/IP like putting the DNS etc.

Anytime you install something from the original NT CD-rom IE: RAS you MUST reinstall the service pack ALWAYS DO THIS becuase when you install an old program it overwrites the newer files so you have to reapply the service pack.

I think you must ask your ISP which DNS you should use. When you are connected does a ping 209.162.55.34 work?

Some ISP also need a router IP too if it is not send during connection.

Try disabling Software Compression and LCP externsions on the dial-up networking tab, and IP header compression on the TCP/IP settings tab, to see if it is one of those items that is causing a problem.

i suspect you were getting "no server storage..." and did not bother to tell us.

I did not try the proposed answer as my problem was solved by reinstalling the SP5 as I describe above on Tuesday, October 12 1999 - 05:44PM PDT
